New diocesan administrator: Alfred Rottler heads the diocese of Eichstätt!
The diocese of Eichstätt has a new diocesan administrator: Alfred Rottler. The cathedral provost takes on this acting role after Bishop Gregor Maria Hanke resigned at his own request on Pentecost Sunday. Again Danube Courier reported, the election for diocesan administrator was made on Friday morning by the active members of the Eichstätter Cathedral Chapter. With the election of Rottler, a transition period begins in the diocese, while business is carried out on a provisional basis until a new bishop is appointed by Pope Leo XIV.
Alfred Rottler, who is 68 years old, has had an impressive career within the diocese. He was ordained a priest in 1983 and has headed the pastoral care/further education department in the Episcopal Ordinariate since 2009. He was largely responsible for the reorganization of the deaneries and the organization of Willibalds Week. In 2010 he was also appointed cathedral chapter and finally cathedral provost in 2019. In addition, he has been President of the diocesan Caritas Association since 2019, where he is committed to the further development of the Christian-Catholic profile, such as Daily mail mentioned.
The general conditions for Rottler's term of office
As a diocesan administrator, Rottler has extensive powers, but must observe certain restrictions in his administration. He is not allowed to perform any sacramental acts that require episcopal ordination, such as the ordination of priests or deacons. During the vacancy, he is also subject to a ban on changes, which means that fundamental or long-term decisions are not permitted. Only ongoing projects that have already been initiated may be continued provided they do not entail any profound changes.
For Rottler, the collaboration with his permanent representative, Michael Alberter, will be of great importance during this transition period. Alberter, who was previously Vicar General, will take over the leadership of the Episcopal Ordinariate. When he became vacant, his authority as Vicar General ended. But Rottler has full confidence in Alberter and both will join forces to guide the diocese safely through this phase Catholic.de notes.
The election of a new bishop will now be made by the Pope from a list of candidates compiled by the Eichstätt Cathedral Chapter and other Bavarian dioceses. However, the exact timing of the appointment remains unclear.
