Lufthansa starts non-stop flights to Riyadh: from Munich from October!

Lufthansa is expanding its route network at Munich Airport and bringing a breath of fresh air to the travel plans of Cologne residents and travelers from the entire region. From October 26, 2025, a non-stop connection from Munich to Riyadh will be offered. This makes many people happy because the Saudi Arabian metropolis has a lot to offer and is in the spotlight at major international events.

The new flight LH640 departs three times a week at 9:45 p.m. and arrives in Riyadh at 4:50 a.m. local time the following day. The return flight from 6:25 a.m. takes passengers back to Munich at 10:25 a.m. Lufthansa uses the modern Airbus A350-900 for this route, which is highly valued for its comfort.

A historical connection

What is particularly noteworthy is that Lufthansa will celebrate the 65th anniversary of its first flight to Saudi Arabia in 2025. With this new connection, the Lufthansa Group's cooperation with Eurowings and ITA Airways becomes even clearer, as they will jointly offer 22 weekly flights to the Saudi Arabian destinations of Riyadh, Dammam and Jeddah. Riyadh itself has almost eight million inhabitants and has served as the seat of Saudi Arabia's government since 1932.

Did you know that the city was historically an important stopover for pilgrims? Today it is surrounded by desert and can already be seen heading towards the big international event: the World Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup 2034. Something is coming!

Criticism of the human rights situation

Of course, the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia is also a hot topic. The international community has repeatedly criticized the suppression of freedom of expression and discrimination there. Travelers flying to this region should be aware of this.

For many people, Munich is particularly pleasant as a connecting airport because it is smaller and clearer than its major competition in Frankfurt. This makes the transfer easier for travelers, especially when traveling with hand luggage. A topic that is not only discussed in forums like on Rick Steves What is being addressed is Lufthansa's baggage regulations. The focus here is on the 8.2 kg hand luggage limit (approx. 18 lbs); Some travelers prefer other airlines that offer more generous baggage limits.

The new connection to Riyadh will certainly attract many travelers who want to discover the diversity of Saudi Arabia for both business and pleasure. Whether shopping tours or cultural experiences – the metropolis has a lot to offer.
