Erlangen shines: 100% recycled paper and zero water consumption!

The city of Erlangen once again made a big statement about environmental protection. The current one Town hall report reports on the award as “multiple winner” as part of the Paper Atlas 2025. This honor was announced by the Pro Recycling Paper initiative in Berlin and impressively shows how active the city is in the use of sustainable materials.

Erlangen has been achieving top results in the Paper Atlas city competition for six years now. This year, 110 large and medium-sized cities are taking part in the assessment, with the average recycled paper rate being a remarkable 90 percent. Erlangen stands out and achieves an overall quota of 100 percent. In administration, in schools and in every printing company, only paper that bears the “Blue Angel” environmental label is used.

Advantages of recycled paper

The use of recycled paper has numerous advantages. It is made from recycled waste paper, cardboard and cardboard, which conserves wood reserves and drastically reduces energy and water consumption compared to conventional production, as explained in the Wikipedia article. Erlangen can look back on impressive figures: a total of over 15.1 million liters of water and 3.4 million kilowatt hours of energy have been saved in the last six years. The water savings correspond to the daily needs of more than 125,200 people!

In terms of energy, it could even cover the annual electricity needs of 975 three-person households. These impressive savings highlight not only the eco-friendly status of recycled paper, but also the city's commitment to sustainable practices.

Sustainable innovative strength

The quality of recycled paper is also worth mentioning: There is not only gray but also white recycled paper, although the latter usually requires more resources. According to that Blue Angel Recycled paper does not compromise usability and meets high standards for printed products such as newspapers, books and more.

The city administration has distinguished itself not only through the numbers, but also through its pioneering role in environmental protection. Erlangen shows that an environmentally friendly way of life can also find its way into the everyday lives of citizens and in public institutions. With commitment and a clear line, the city is well on its way to continuing to be successful in fashion in the coming years.

The next dates for interested citizens have already been set: The Building and Works Committee will meet on November 11th, while the Sports Committee will also discuss numerous points regarding the 2026 budget on that day. Anyone interested in educational events should not miss Kristina Lunz's reading at 7 p.m. in the city library. Fans of film will also get their money's worth when the Erlangen Video Club invites you to a filmic world tour at vhs on November 13th.

Overall, it is pleasing to see the progress Erlangen is making in the area of sustainability. The combination of awareness, commitment and concrete numbers lays the foundation for a green future.
