Freising is blossoming: inner city development inspires city planner!

A lot has happened in Freising in the last few years! City planner Sonja Rube praises the positive development of the city center, which has been under scrutiny since 2008. At that time, the city center had to struggle with empty shops, high traffic and a lack of quality of life. Pedestrians and cyclists felt unsafe and the noise was often unbearable. But the time for complaining is over, as Merkur reports.

A comprehensive concept for inner city development was launched, which was consolidated through numerous workshops and excursions. The aim was to increase the quality of stay without sacrificing accessibility. This resulted in the creation of a pedestrian zone in the center and meeting areas on the sides of the old town. Freising attracts a lot of attention - other cities envy its future-oriented approach, which is considered exemplary.

The challenges

Despite the progress that has already been made, Rube still sees problems that need to be overcome. Illegal parking, parent taxis and fast cyclists still pose challenges. One suggestion for the future is a campaign to promote coexistence in the city. The planning committee also recommended avoiding an extensive pedestrian zone in order to maintain the balance between accessibility and quality of life.

A comprehensive urban development plan, STEP 2030, supports these efforts. This was developed over a multi-year process and was unanimously approved by the city council in 2014, as stadtfreising.de reports. The agenda here includes short, medium and long-term projects that are intended to promote sustainable urban development. The motto is: “Preserve our homeland – shape growth”.

Sustainable perspectives

The current discussion about urban living spaces worldwide shows how important sustainable urban development is. According to bpb, over 50% of the world's population already lives in cities, and the trend is rising. Future generations hope that urban development will provide better access to basic resources such as income, housing and education.

The challenges are diverse. Climate change, air pollution and the social compatibility of new projects are just some of the major issues that should motivate responsible actors. Freising sees itself in a pioneering role by focusing not only on ecological but also social aspects of urban development. The success of STEP 2030 will determine how well the city can overcome these challenges and whether it will remain a vibrant place for everyone.
