Freyung says goodbye: Norbert Pittner ends his era!
The headline in Freyung today is: After 27 years it's over! Norbert Pittner, well-known and popular at the primary school at Wolfstein Castle, is retiring. Since September 1998 he has been the good soul of the school and not only took care of the maintenance, but also the break sales, which he ran for five years beyond his official term of service. With persistence and a big heart, he prepared fresh snacks every day for the students who streamed into school between 8:15 a.m. and the big break. The liver casserole, which was often served with cucumber, was particularly well received by the little connoisseurs, while on Tuesdays the focus was on the veggie variants. As a rule, 40 to 50 children came to get their lunch every day, and in bad weather the queues were often even longer.
Pittner was known for not abandoning children who had no money. Many people fondly remember the moments when he generously granted “credit” or gave away pretzels. This has secured him the hearts of the student body. Mayor Olaf Heinrich honored Pittner's commitment, described it as an institution and noted that many generations of students have fond memories of Pittner's warm break sales. “The time at primary school was the best time of my life, and I will miss the children very much,” says Pittner wistfully.
Looking for a new operator for break sales
With Pittner's departure there is now a gap that needs to be filled. The city of Freyung has already taken measures and is looking for a successor to the popular break sale from the 2025/26 school year. Interested operators can apply until July 25, 2025. The infrastructure, such as furniture and cooling facilities, is provided by the material expenditure provider and no rent is charged. It is important that the sales prices are family and child-friendly. The collaboration is also initially limited to one school year, which gives the new operator the opportunity to prove themselves.
Until then, the people responsible are looking for creative concepts for the offer. The city administration accepts applications and concepts regarding pricing and experience in the field of school catering. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Juliane Groß on 08551 / 588-118.
The importance of healthy school meals
The importance of balanced school meals should not be underestimated. Recent statistics show that 69 percent of students between the ages of 6 and 17 have access to hot school meals. This is crucial because a healthy diet supports not only the physical but also the mental growth of children. The German Society for Nutrition has developed standards for school meals that are intended to ensure that the offerings are both convenient and health-conscious. These standards are an important basis for supporting children in preventing diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
The city of Freyung and the school at Wolfstein Castle are not only faced with the challenge of reorganizing the break sales, but also of creating a healthy eating atmosphere for the children. If the new operator deals with the love for children and the needs of the students, this could be the beginning of a new era - in the spirit of Norbert Pittner.
