In the town of Germering, which is located north of Munich, there are upcoming construction projects on the A99 motorway, which are of great importance for both residents and commuters. Around 90,000 vehicles pass through this busy route every day, which is now reaching its capacity limits. How Mercury reports, an increase of around 30,000 vehicles on weekdays is expected by 2035. These developments make an expansion of the A99 essential.
The plan is to expand the route between the Munich-South-West motorway triangle and the Munich-West motorway junction to a total of six lanes. The expansion is scheduled to start in June 2028 at the earliest, with the section between Munich-South-West and the Aubinger Tunnel being tackled first. The third lane in the tunnel will be set up on the previous security strip, which will be compensated for by more intensive monitoring. Road safety has the highest priority here.
Details about the construction work
One of the crucial points is the use of modern technologies in the Aubinger Tunnel, where around 20,000 sensors are to be installed. These sensors not only monitor traffic, but also parked vehicles and air currents. The expansion of the Munich-Freiham-Mitte and Germering-Nord junctions as well as the renovation of the overpass structures are also part of the overall project.
Noise protection is another central issue. Walls up to four meters high are planned on the Freiham side, while noise barriers up to six meters high will be built on the Germeringer side. Some of these walls will also be equipped with photovoltaic systems, which brings a sustainable aspect to the project. There will also be additional height controls in front of the junction to avoid the Aubinger Tunnel being closed.
Environmental measures and costs
Of course, environmental protection is an important issue that is also taken into account. In order not to endanger the existing flora and fauna, plants and animals in the ramparts must be relocated. Previous compensation areas could no longer be used due to new circumstances, but the two existing groundwater basins in the section remain untouched.
The total gross cost of the project is around 185 million euros and the estimated construction time is around six years. The city of Germering has already been intensively informed about the plans, most recently in July 2023 and during city council meetings in March and June 2024. This transparency is intended to help keep residents informed about developments and to promote their understanding of the necessary measures.
