Farewell to the air base: Air Force makes final overflights over Fürstenfeldbruck

An era is coming to an end! The Air Force Officers' School will soon say goodbye to the Fürstenfeldbruck Air Base - a place that was closely linked to the Bundeswehr for many years. The last day of school for the officer candidates is approaching, as the final meeting of the former flying personnel and their ground service staff will take place on June 26, 2025. So reported Mercury.

On this day, the sky over Fürstenfeldbruck is alive with military aircraft. Overflights with two Tornados, two Eurofighters and an A-400M transport aircraft are planned between 3 and 4 p.m. It starts with an Alpha Jet from the former Fighter Bomber Squadron 49, which should arouse nostalgia among those present.

The move of the officers' school

The officers' school, which has been located in Fürstenfeldbruck for years, will be relocated to Roth near Nuremberg in 2023. The decision to relocate was made in advance and teaching in Roth began at the beginning of June 2023. The entire move is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Colonel Gero von Fritschen, the current site senior, plays a key role, while Brigadier General Stefan Scheibl will change leadership at the turn of the year 2023/2024. It was a moving chapter in the military history of the region, which is coming to an end here South Germans reported.

With the move of the officers' school, other parts of the military are also leaving the air base. For example, the medical service will leave by the end of 2025. The Center for Geoinformation will move to Euskirchen by early 2026, and other units will follow in the coming years. Many residents ask themselves: “What will happen to the site then?” The civil redevelopment of the approximately 200 hectare area is intended to change the character of the city.

Traditions and future

Despite the impending withdrawal, the tradition of gatherings remains alive. These go back to the time of the US soldiers at the air base and always took place on the last Thursday before Christmas. The latest military exercise will be coordinated and monitored by an aviation office, with residents having the opportunity to direct questions or complaints to the Bundeswehr on the free number (0800) 8620730.

The citizens of the region can already look forward to a cultural highlight: On Thursday, July 3rd, the Ulm Army Music Corps is inviting people to a serenade in Fürstenfeld, which is sure to attract many visitors. In this context, Mayor Christian Götz speaks of an “end of an era” for Bruck, but also sees the opportunity for positive change through the civil transformations that will follow the site.

The air force itself, part of the Bundeswehr and responsible for Germany's air defense, remains active. It is divided into various areas, including aviation service and technical support. With a staff of around 28,000 soldiers, it is involved in all Bundeswehr missions abroad and ensures security in German airspace Wikipedia notes.

Looking ahead, it will be exciting to see how the location of the Fürstenfeldbruck air base will be redesigned after the withdrawal and what new opportunities will open up for the citizens.
