Laura Dahlmeier: Biathlon icon dies tragically in mountain accident in Pakistan

A tragic accident overshadowed the biathlon community: Laura Dahlmeier, the celebrated biathlon icon, died in a mountain accident in the Karakoram Mountains in Pakistan on August 17, 2025. She was hit by a rockfall at Laila Peak, leaving fans and the sports world in shock. The death of the 31-year-old was confirmed by her management just a few days after the accident.

Laura Dahlmeier was born on August 22, 1993 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Her parents, Andreas and Susi, were successful mountain bike riders in the 1990s. You could say sport is in her blood. She started biathlon when she was just seven years old and decided to take up this demanding sport after two years, even though she had also tried alpine ski racing before.

A climb to the stars

At the 2013 Junior World Championships in Obertilliach she celebrated fabulous success by winning three golds and one silver. As a result, she was named the best young biathlete of the year and received the Bavarian Sports Prize. The subsequent push at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where she won silver in the relay, was just the beginning of an impressive career.

The 2015 World Championships in Kontiolahti was another milestone: Here she won gold in the relay and silver in the pursuit. In 2016 she shone at the World Championships in Oslo with five medals in five races, including gold in the pursuit. She secured the first overall World Cup of her career in 2017, followed by a fantastic performance at the World Championships in Hochfilzen, where she won five gold medals.

At the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang 2018, she secured two gold medals (sprint and pursuit) and one bronze medal. But in 2019, at just 25 years old, she surprised the world by retiring from professional sports because she lacked passion.

A serious loss

After her resignation, Laura Dahlmeier remained loyal to biathlon as a TV expert and made her debut in this role in 2019. Her influence and passion for the sport she loved will never be forgotten. A personal drama hit her in 2022 when her ex-boyfriend Robert Grasegger died in an avalanche accident in Patagonia.

Biathlon, a sport that combines cross-country skiing and shooting and whose roots lie in Scandinavian ski traditions, has grown enormously in popularity in recent decades. The first Winter Olympics, where biathlon was featured during the military patrol competition, took place back in 1924. From 1992, women were also allowed to take part in these competitions, which made the sport even more popular.

Through her successes and her charismatic appearance, Laura Dahlmeier has helped to make biathlon known in Germany and beyond. She not only leaves behind her sporting successes, but also many emotional memories for her fans and friends. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of athletes and the biathlon community.
