Serious accident in Delmenhorst: Transporter crashes into freight train!

In a frightening incident on the evening of June 25, 2025, there was a serious accident between a transporter and a freight train in Delmenhorst. The 28-year-old driver ignored the red lights at a level crossing with no barriers and was seriously injured. Despite the train driver's emergency braking, the collision could not be prevented. The driver was trapped in the vehicle upon impact and had to be freed by firefighters before he could be taken to a nearby hospital. It is also suspected that the man was under the influence of drugs and did not have a valid driver's license. Fortunately, the driver of the unloaded freight train remained uninjured. [Zeit] reports that this incident once again highlights the dangers at level crossings.

Unfortunately, such accidents are not uncommon in Germany. An analysis by [TÜV NORD] shows that every third accident involving trains occurs at a level crossing. Of particular concern is the fact that 98 percent of fatal accidents occur in this area. The head of railway technology at TÜV NORD, Stefan Pöting, points out that the long braking distances of trains are often underestimated. At a speed of 160 kilometers per hour, local trains need around 700 meters to come to a complete stop, which makes the situation at an unguarded level crossing extremely dangerous. Pöting warns that it is better to reach your destination too late than to take a risk.

Comparison with other accidents

The incident in Delmenhorst is reminiscent of another accident that occurred on April 1, 2025 in the Steyr-Land district. A 25-year-old truck driver from Amstetten wanted to cross a restricted railway crossing, but found himself in an awkward position. His truck, which was loaded with pellets, had to reverse several times due to a tight curve, which resulted in the railway barriers getting caught on the truck's body. As a result, he was unable to leave the tracks in time, and a freight train ended up colliding with the truck. The truck's loss of surface area was enormous - it fell onto the driver's side and caused considerable damage to both the vehicle and the train. The train driver was able to get to safety in time, but still suffered minor injuries.

The rescue work also proved to be complicated because the only access road to the accident site was a narrow dead end. Train traffic on the affected route was closed until the afternoon hours to allow for cleanup. This shows once again how important preventative measures and safety precautions are at level crossings.

The issue of level crossings should concern us all. They are often unsafe risks on the road and the responsibility of both drivers and those responsible for road safety is enormous. Education, information and the correct use of existing safety measures are essential to prevent further tragic accidents like those in Delmenhorst and Steyr-Land. Safety at level crossings is not just a technical challenge, but above all a human challenge.
