Traffic jam horror at the Fern Pass: How to avoid the traffic chaos!
Today, November 9th, 2025, the traffic news from the region around the Fernpassstraße (B179/E532) is particularly relevant. This important north-south connection in western Austria stretches for around 50 kilometers and connects the Tyrolean Inn Valley with the Ausserfern. It is considered a central transit route between Germany and Italy and attracts large numbers of travelers, especially during the holiday season and on weekends.
Again Travel reporter reported, traffic jams, delays and even closures are not uncommon. The main reasons for the high traffic volume are holiday traffic between Bavaria and South Tyrol and truck transit traffic that avoids the Brenner motorway. Commuters traveling between the Ausserfern and the Inn Valley also contribute to the busy traffic situation.
Current traffic situation
Current traffic information includes live traffic jam reports, bottleneck times, construction site overviews and alternative route planning. As a rule, the section between Nassereith and Lermoos is known as a bottleneck because there is only a two-lane route available here. Border controls at the Füssen/Rute crossing are primarily planned at peak times, which can result in additional delays. The German Federal Police also carries out random checks.
Peak times include Friday afternoon and Sunday afternoon in particular. In addition, the start and end of holidays in Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and Italy are frequent occasions for increased traffic jams. Construction sites, accidents and, last but not least, winter conditions can also severely impact traffic flow.
Planned improvements
A Fernpass tunnel is planned for the future, construction of which is scheduled to begin in 2027 and could be completed in 2029. This could relieve pressure on the Fernpass road. An expansion of the Lermoos Tunnel is also being discussed. Alternative transport can help relieve the burden. For example, it is advisable to travel at times with little traffic, i.e. early in the morning or late in the evening. An alternative route via Garmisch, Mittenwald, Seefeld and Innsbruck should also be considered.
A look at the financial aspects: The Fernpass road is currently not subject to tolls, but a toll will be introduced from 2029. Interestingly, trucks over 3.5 tonnes are already subject to the GO toll, which includes payment options - from cash payments to digital video tolls.
