Increasing MVV tariffs: price increase from 2026 and expanded zones!

The city of Munich is facing a turning point in local public transport. From January 1, 2026, fares in the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV) will rise sharply. As the Borken newspaper informed, the average price increase will be around 3.9 percent. For many commuters and travelers, this means that they have to dig deeper into their pockets.

The famous strip card, which was previously available for 17.80 euros, will be increased to 18.70 euros. Single tickets in Zone M have also increased by ten cents, so they will now cost 4.20 euros. In addition, passengers must expect rising prices for monthly, weekly and group day tickets.

Price adjustments in detail

The price changes in zones 2 to 12 are particularly positive for passengers from the surrounding area, where prices for single tickets, day tickets and strip tickets are falling. In the future, only one strip instead of two will be needed for a journey, which will make it much easier to use. These adjustments are part of a larger price renewal that will comprehensively expand the MVV on January 1, 2026.

As part of the planned reform, the MVV will expand to include the districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Mühldorf am Inn and the city of Landshut. A new MVV ticket for trips from Munich to Landshut will be available; For 18.70 euros, passengers receive ten stripes or a single day ticket for 23.90 euros. The prices for the monthly ticket S and the social ticket remain constant.

As the MVV website reported, the benefits such as taking children with you free of charge with the single day ticket also remain. The price increases also apply to season tickets and subscriptions: increases of 4.3 to 6.3 percent are planned, while the popular 365 euro ticket for students and trainees remains the same and the Bavarian reduction ticket is offered at 29 euros per month for certain groups of people.

What may seem shocking at first glance to many travelers is partly a response to the increased costs for energy and personnel, which are also affecting local public transport. According to a report by daily news Similar developments can also be seen in other large transport associations, so that we can speak of a trend situation throughout Germany.

A very special change concerns the use-up and exchange periods for tickets: Passengers can use up zone and short-distance fares until the end of March 2026, while season tickets remain valid until the end of their validity period. With a reorganization like the one that will take place from 2026, there is a lot to consider for many commuters and hobby drivers.

With the upcoming price increase, MVV will also offer its passengers a broader and more comfortable connection to the new districts, which may put the increase in some prices at least a little into perspective. So it remains to be hoped that the new prices will be accepted by many as fair and justified.
