Fatal hiking accident: woman falls into waterfall near Garmisch!
A tragic incident occurred on Wednesday evening, August 13, 2025, near Garmisch-Partenkirchen. A 49-year-old woman fell into a waterfall while hiking in the Alps and died. The incident happened around 8.30 p.m. in the Partnach when the woman was in a river basin and was swept away by the current. Her 48-year-old husband and a mountain guide tried desperately to help her, but they too were caught in the strong current and fell into the waterfall.
The two men remained seriously injured in the water and needed immediate help. The mountain rescue service reacted quickly and treated the injured in complete darkness. They were transported to nearby hospitals by helicopter. While the woman succumbed to her serious injuries that night, her husband is in a stable condition but with serious injuries. There is no danger to his life.
Family members in shock
The couple's two children and another child who witnessed the accident are receiving support from a crisis intervention team. These dramatic scenes took place while the entire eight-person hiking group, led by a mountain guide, was on the way to the Zugspitze, where they planned to climb the summit the following day. The deceased woman came from the Speyer district in Rhineland-Palatinate.
In recent years there have been repeated tragic accidents in the Alps with serious consequences. For example, in February 2025, a 25-year-old snowshoe hiker died in the neighboring Berchtesgadener Land district. In addition, seven hikers in the Berchtesgaden Alps were in danger in May when they lost their route. Another serious incident occurred in June last year when a 65-year-old alpinist had a fatal fall in Tyrol.
Hiking in the Alps – risks and safety
Hiking in the Alps is attracting more and more people, but the risks should not be underestimated. Experts emphasize that hikers should always pay attention to weather conditions and follow the advice of experienced mountain guides. Nature can be unpredictable and safety should always come first.
Finally, we can only hope that the relatives of the deceased woman find comfort and that the injured recover soon. The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with hiking in the mountains and reminds us to approach such activities responsibly.
