63-year-old steals cell phone in Thannhausen and throws it in the trash!
A slightly different kind of theft recently occurred in the hypermarket on Mayor-Raab-Strasse in Thannhausen. On Monday evening, a 63-year-old stole a 31-year-old's cell phone, which she briefly placed on a deposit machine while she was shopping with her family. When the woman turned around, her smartphone had disappeared without a trace. But the victim couldn't just be brushed off and used the tracking function on her cell phone to find the device. This is how she got to the perpetrator's home address and confronted him directly about the theft.
However, the situation escalated when the suspected thief fled. In an impulsive moment, he destroyed the cell phone and threw the remains into the nearby Mindel, a tributary of the Danube. The police were called in after the victim said she would inform them. The perpetrator could be reached by telephone and ultimately returned to his apartment, where a police patrol picked him up. Together with the 31-year-old and the officers, he led the emergency services to the place where the destroyed cell phone was found in Mindel. The police estimate the damage at around 600 euros.
Theft statistics in focus
What is behind such criminal behavior? According to a study that looks at crime in Germany, around 1.78 million thefts were recorded by the police in 2022, and the trend shows an increase compared to previous years. Shoplifting is particularly common, with over 344,000 cases registered in 2022. This shows that theft is a cause for concern and can manifest itself in various forms. North Rhine-Westphalia alone recorded over 23,500 home break-ins in the same year, which shows that people are increasingly concerned about the security of their property.
The clearance rate for residential burglaries was 16.1% in 2022, while it was 31.1% for vehicle theft. This suggests that, despite the high number of crimes, the chances of victims recovering their stolen items are not always optimal. Robbery crimes took place over 38,000 times in 2022 and the police are continuously processing cases to maintain safety in everyday life.
Given these statistics, it is clear that security awareness among the population continues to be in demand. Experts advise you to always keep an eye on valuables and not to hesitate to contact the authorities if you have any suspicions. In this way, the community can be given more security at the same time.
In summary, whether in the supermarket or on the street, the security of our property is always an important aspect of life. The example from Thannhausen clearly shows how quickly a moment of carelessness can lead to the loss of personal items.
