Windows 10: Disaster for town halls in the Günzburg district!
Microsoft will stop supporting Windows 10 from October 2025, which will impact the infrastructure in Günzburg.

Windows 10: Disaster for town halls in the Günzburg district!
In a significant twist, Microsoft is warning that updates to Windows 10 will no longer be offered starting mid-October. This not only affects private users, but also numerous administrations, including town halls in the Günzburg district. As the Augsburger Allgemeine reported, affected computers will have to prepare for increased vulnerability to cyberattacks as security updates will no longer apply.
Private users have the option of extending this period free of charge by one year until autumn 2026. For companies and administrations, however, a paid extension is required. This is already leading to concrete measures, such as in the case of the city of Leipheim, which is planning to purchase 70 new computers for its branch offices. This involves costs of over 56,000 euros, which consist of the purchase of 39 PCs and 11 laptops for the primary and middle school.
High investments and license fees
In addition to the acquisition costs, there are also license fees for the Exchange server amounting to 15,000 euros and for new Microsoft Office licenses, which cost around 8,000 euros. In total, this results in a proud sum of 80,025 euros, which has to be made available in Leipheim. City councilor Robert Henn described these costs as “absolutely rock-bottom prices” and emphasized the need to invest in modern technology.
In Krumbach, however, things look a little different. The current computers can continue to be used until January 2026, and only minor expenses are required for replacement, which is estimated at 15,000 to 20,000 euros. The majority of the Günzburg District Office's approximately 850 notebooks, tablets and PCs are still in operation and only require sporadic maintenance.
Overview of the affected costs
| post | Cost |
|---|---|
| New computers for Leipheim | 56,000 euros |
| Exchange server license fees | 15,000 euros |
| Microsoft Office licenses | 8,000 euros |
| Total costs for Leipheim | 80,025 euros |
An additional topic is the future of old computers. These must either be scrapped or recycled as they are no longer suitable for further operation. In Krumbach it is being discussed whether it is possible to donate the old devices to charitable institutions, although the problem of sensitive data on the hard drives cannot be ignored.
Important steps for users
For those who want to continue receiving updates for their Windows 10 system, there is a way: users should check their settings by going to Update & Security and finding the option to sign up for the ESU updates. However, this option is not yet visible on all affected computers as Microsoft is rolling it out gradually. It is recommended to ensure that the latest updates are installed and the user account has administrative rights. Details are available on Microsoft's support page, such as Test.de communicates.
This transition to a phase without Windows 10 updates raises many questions. Companies and administrations are well advised to act in good time to ensure IT security and not to experience any unpleasant surprises.
