Regensburg-Ingolstadt railway line: major construction site until September!
On June 30, 2025, there will be some massive changes for rail travelers between Regensburg and Ingolstadt. From July 4th, Deutsche Bahn (DB) will begin extensive renovation work on the Danube Valley Railway. This work, which will last until September, will completely close the route in several sections.
How br.de reports, the DB is making a total of around 23 million euros available for the modernization of the route. A central element of the work is the extensive renovation of the railway bridge in Sinzing and the barrier-free expansion of the Abensberg train station. In addition, new rails will be laid between testening and matting.
Planned closures and replacement traffic
The construction work affects all trains on the RB 17 line that are canceled during this time. The first phase of the complete closure is planned for the period from July 4th to 31st, between Regensburg and Neustadt/Donau. From July 31st to September 2nd, the route between Sinzing and Regensburg main station will not be passable. The situation is also dramatic because of the replacement buses provided by Agilis, as some train stations, such as Regensburg-Prüfening, are not served and buses run at different times that do not always reach all connections.
The different blocking times can be broken down as follows:
- 3. bis 31. Juli 2025: Sperre zwischen Neustadt und Regensburg Hbf
- 31. Juli bis 2. September 2025: Sperre zwischen Sinzing und Regensburg Hbf
- 29. August bis 1. September 2025: Sperre zwischen Neustadt und Regensburg Hbf
- Weitere Sperrungen: 7. Juli, 21 Uhr bis 1. August 2025, 5 Uhr: Regensburg – Ingolstadt
- 8. August, 21 Uhr bis 14. August 2025, 5 Uhr: Regensburg – Neustadt
- 8. August, 21 Uhr bis 29. August 2025, 5 Uhr: Regensburg – Ingolstadt
The details of timetables and substitutions are available online at Agilis to provide travelers with the information they need. Travelers should therefore inform themselves well in advance.
The background to the renovation work
The Danube Valley Railway, one of the oldest railway connections in Germany, has been used to transport goods and people since it opened 150 years ago. These renovation measures are part of a larger DB restructuring program, which earmarks a total of 53 billion euros for improving the rail infrastructure by 2027 deutschebahn.com communicates. The more intensive maintenance measures aim to make existing infrastructure fit for the future.
The barrier-free expansion of Abensberg train station, which is expected to cost 13 million euros, is a further step towards modern mobility. People expect a sustainable rail network that is both reliable and user-friendly.
The situation for rail travelers is not exactly rosy at the moment, but the DB has a good knack for getting the infrastructure up to speed. Efforts being made to improve the rail network by 2027 could be the path to more pleasant rail travel.
