On December 22, 2025, the notary contract for the sale of the former Weka department store was signed, and the Weka building is now owned by the city of Kronach. Jörg Schnitzler, spokesman for the owner representatives, confirmed the successful completion of the sale and described it as a potential milestone for the development of the city center. The Kronach city council unanimously decided at a meeting to acquire the department store, which is seen as a sign of strengthening the city center. The Christmas business is still in full swing, while plans for future use are already being made.
The purchase covers an area of 3,000 square meters. Discussions have already taken place with the property owner and the management of the Weka department store under the eyes of the city council. A future-oriented goal is to secure long-term retail in the city center. The aim is for the Weka department store to remain active and maintain business operations even after the lease expires. In this way, the importance of Kronach as a shopping city, which has suffered in recent years due to various challenges, such as vacancies and the fate of traditional shops, could be strengthened again, as Difu also notes.
