Big Pumuckl hurray: First exhibition in Landshut celebrates its anniversary!
The anticipation in Landshut is great! The 60th birthday of the Pumuckl radio play will be celebrated on October 12, 2025. On the occasion of this special anniversary there is the first major museum exhibition on the popular Klabautermann. The exhibition takes visitors into the fascinating interactive world of the lovable character, who has thrilled not only children but also adults for generations. The Bavarian city is the starting point for a homage to the Pumuckl and its creators.
We take a look at the creative minds behind the little goblin. The author Ellis Kaut, who first made the Pumuckl stories heard on Bayerischer Rundfunk in 1965, is considered to be the origin of this cult figure. At their side are the illustrators Barbara von Johnson and Brian Bagnall, who have breathed visual life into the Pumuckl. Johnson is not called the “optical mother” of the Pumuckl for nothing; In 1963 she won the competition to visualize the goblin that Ellis Kaut had announced and illustrated numerous books and record covers for radio plays. She explained that Pumuckl “whispered” his appearance into her ear. Some of her original illustrations can now be seen in the Landshut exhibition and provide an insight into the creative origins of the little goblin.
Pumuckl's development and media presence
Pumuckl's path led from radio plays to books to film and television. The TV series “Meister Eder and his Pumuckl”, which started in 1982, made the character popular in German living rooms. Hans Clarin lent his voice to Pumuckl, while Gustl Bayerhammer as Master Eder brought unforgettable moments into the hearts of the audience. Since 1979, Brian Bagnall has designed the illustrations for Pumuckl books and sales items, following in Barbara von Johnson's footsteps.
The graphic representation of the Pumuckl has changed over the years. The development of Pumuckl is easy to understand:
- Pumuckl von Brian Bagnall (1979)
- Pumuckl aus dem Fernsehen (ab 1982)
- Pumuckl im Comic (ab 1984)
- Pumuckl von Brian Bagnall (ab 2000)
- Pumuckl von Jan Saße (2015)
- Pumuckl im Styleguide der Buchagentur (seit 2016)
The Pumuckl still lives on actively today. Barbara von Johnson and Uschi Bagnall are currently busy with new projects that honor the legacy of Ellis Kaut and the Klabautermann. KOSMOS Publishing has already published several new Pumuckl reading books that continue the tradition of storytelling. Johnson also created a loving doodle in honor of Kaut's 96th birthday in 2017.
Coming soon to the cinema!
Pumuckl fans also have a special highlight in store: a new Pumuckl film directed by Marcus H. Rosenmüller is planned for the end of October 2025. This means the Pumuckl will be brought back to the big screen and can further expand its fan base.
The exhibition in Landshut promises to be a true celebration for all Pumuckl lovers and offers valuable insights into the magical world that Ellis Kaut and her co-creators have created. A visit is definitely a must for all fans big and small!
