Historical special train to Chemnitz: A trip into a railway adventure!
In the coming weeks, a very special event will make the hearts of railway fans beat: On Saturday, August 23, 2025, the Franconian Museum Railway e.V. Nuremberg (FME) is organizing a nostalgic train trip to Chemnitz, this year's European Capital of Culture. The trip promises not only an exciting journey with a historic special train, but also a variety of attractions in “Chemnitz – the city that has a lot to offer”, such as in Franconia reported.
The train, which consists of a diesel locomotive and carriages from the 1930s and 1950s, will take passengers from Fürth via Nuremberg, Lauf and Hersbruck through the picturesque Pegnitz Valley. There are various stops along the way, including Neuhaus/Pegnitz, Kirchenlaibach, Marktredwitz and Hof. Of particular note is the Göltzschtal Viaduct, the largest brick bridge in the world, which was completed in 1851 and lies on the route. The arrival at Chemnitz main station is planned for around 12:58 p.m., followed by a further journey to the Chemnitz-Hilbersdorf stop.
Special railway depot with history
A highlight of the trip is the visit to the railway depot, which is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. Here, passengers can spend three and a half hours visiting the Heizhausfest, which is organized in cooperation with the Saxon Railway Museum and the Richard Hartmann Railway Friends. Again Saxon Railway Museum reports, the festival will take place from August 25th to 27th, 2023 and is known for its extensive supporting program.
Visitors can look forward to seven locomotives running under steam, moderated presentations on the turntable and numerous locomotive parades. There is also a parade of electric locomotives and an exciting cultural program. Over 60 historic locomotives are on display, including 25 steam locomotives. Anyone with a bit of a sense of adventure has the opportunity to take part in special trips such as the “Heizhausexpress” to Marienberg.
Unique experiences in the railway setting
However, the attractions in Chemnitz don't stop there. The railway venue, as the largest German railway museum, offers a lively railway history that should not be missed. The museum in the former marshalling yard and railway depot includes a variety of steam, diesel and electric locomotives as well as historic wagons. Particularly impressive is the rope run system, which is unique in the world and can be viewed in the museum. Chemnitz.de highlights the various interactive offers that make the visit an experience for the whole family.
For interested railway enthusiasts, there is even the opportunity to experience cab rides and take part in various exhibitions. And the little guests don't miss out either: the Schauplatz Rallye is a popular learning opportunity that delights young and old alike.
