S-Bahn closure in Nuremberg: No trains to Lauf for weeks!

From August 4, 2025, the S-Bahn line S2 between Nuremberg and Lauf (left of the Pegnitz) will be closed for several weeks due to extensive construction work. These measures are part of an initiative to improve accessibility at key S-Bahn stations in the region. The work is expected to last until September 15, 2025, so travelers should plan well. During this time there will be no train service on this section, which is why a replacement bus service will be set up to still take passengers to their destination. Travelers are advised to find out about the current timetables in good time in the DB Navigator or on the official Deutsche Bahn website, as short-term changes cannot be ruled out, as t-online.de reports.

The affected stations include Nuremberg-Ostring, Nuremberg-Mögeldorf, Schwaig and Röthenbach an der Pegnitz. To ensure accessibility, the track bed at these stations will be raised, which will involve the dismantling of tracks, sleepers and ballast. A leveling layer and new tracks are then installed. These necessary steps serve to adapt the entry heights to the modern trains, which have been running on the Nuremberg S-Bahn network since the end of 2020 with a uniform entry height of 76 cm. This is particularly important because the platform edges at several stations on the S2 are about 20 cm higher, such as [deutschebahn.com].

Construction time and noise-intensive work

The work will take place in several phases: Between August 4th and 14th, work will take place on the Nuremberg Ostring, followed by Mögeldorf until August 26th, Schwaig until September 4th and finally in Röthenbach an der Pegnitz until September 14th. During this period there may be increased noise pollution, which is why residents are asked to show their understanding. As a rule, the work takes place between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m., in exceptional cases also at night, according to the information from nn.de.

The decision to schedule this construction work during the summer holidays was made in order not to impact student traffic. Nevertheless, all travelers who rely on this S-Bahn route should adjust to the changed conditions before starting their journey and consider alternative travel plans, as bicycles are also not allowed to be taken on the replacement buses for reasons of space.
