Rescue operation at Schliersee: Drifted SUPs cause an alarm!
On Tuesday evening, June 25, 2025, a major alarm broke out for the rescue workers at Schliersee. A passer-by reported two abandoned stand-up paddle boards (SUPs) floating east of the island of Wörth around 8 p.m. It was unclear whether there had been people on the boards beforehand, which resulted in extensive alerting of the water rescue team. This decision was wise because there are many risks and unpredictable dangers in the water that should not be underestimated. Loud Mercury Numerous rescue organizations were involved in this large-scale evening operation, including the water rescue service and the DLRG from Schliersee, Miesbach, Gmund and Tegernsee as well as the fire brigade from Schliersee and Neuhaus. A rescue helicopter was also used.
The concerned rescuers secure the drifted boards and take them to the Schliersee lido as a precaution. A 33-year-old from Schliersee quickly came forward with a boat to identify himself as the owner of the boards. These were apparently borrowed and had not been tied properly when returned; the wind had carried them away. Such incidents are not new at Schliersee. In recent years there have been several major incidents due to abandoned surf or SUP boards. The costs of the operation currently remain unclear, but an appeal from Tobias Hallinger, the operations manager of the DLRG Gmund-Waakirchen water rescue service, is clear: “Owners and landlords should label their boards better in order to avoid future large-scale operations.”
