Subway chaos in Munich: derailment of the U6 causes massive disruption!
On June 12, 2025, there was some turbulence for passengers on the U6 subway line in Munich. The reason for this was a derailment during shunting work at the Harras stop, where fortunately no passengers were on board. The driver remained unharmed and is receiving support from the Munich Transport Company (MVG) crisis intervention team. The derailment happened around 3:15 p.m. in the afternoon, and the Harras stop will remain closed until Friday at 11 p.m., which has a drastic impact on subway traffic. However, the all-clear was announced the next morning, June 13th, as operations resumed, albeit with restrictions, as Merkur reports.
The MVG reacted quickly to the incident and set up a replacement rail service. Shuttle trains currently only run between Klinikum Großhadern and Partnachplatz, as well as between Garching Research Center and Implerstrasse, although there are diversions that lead to Fürstenried West. Buses will be used as replacements between Implerstrasse and Partnachplatz, and passengers can also use the X30 bus from Brudermühlstrasse to Harras or the 54 bus via Harras to Partnachplatz. According to Abendzeitung, two sections of the U6 have already been served regularly again since operations began on June 13th, which has made the situation a little more relaxing for commuters.
Repair work and fault reports
The repair work on the damaged tracks and the power rail was successfully completed on the night of June 13th and the disruptions were expected to be completely resolved by Friday. Nevertheless, there were still isolated reports of disruptions via the MVG app in the following days, as some of the subway lines were also affected by construction sites, for example in the area of the Fröttmaning subway station. Meanwhile, the subway line U3 was running regularly, but there were possible delays and train cancellations, as Süddeutsche noted.
The exact cause of the derailment remains under investigation. The MVG has not yet been able to publish any findings, but would like to rule out potential security risks and clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident. Until the exact cause is determined, attention will remain on ensuring the work is carried out smoothly and protecting the safety of passengers.
For the coming days, it should be noted that the U6 will probably have to expect restrictions until Friday evening, but the MVG will do everything in its power to restore the usual processes as quickly as possible. So if you want to travel with the U6 in the next few days, you should always keep an eye on the current information in the MVG app.
