Digital revolution: Nuremberg Clinic starts with AI-based HIS!

On October 1, 2023, the Nuremberg Clinic took an impressive step towards the digital future with the Orbis hospital information system (HIS) from Dedalus. With this change, the clinic is the first large hospital in Germany to successfully switch to a modern system after its previous SAP solution was phased out. @kma reports that the project duration was only one year, during which the old systems were completely replaced.

Over 300,000 inpatients and outpatients are treated every year, and the new system makes it possible to digitally document and coordinate numerous steps in the treatment process. This not only means relief for employees, but also improved patient care. This transformation was the result of close collaboration between all those involved, which helped complete the conversion in record time.

A digital revolution in healthcare

The introduction of the Orbis system forms the basis for the use of cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence and advanced data analysis, which are important for both research and science. The entire patient journey - from admission through diagnosis and therapy to discharge and billing - is now digitally mapped by the new system. With this digitalization, processes are made significantly easier and user guidance is improved, which enables seamless cooperation between the medical and nursing areas, as the Nuremberg Clinic highlights in its press release.

Further steps are also planned as part of this digitalization strategy. In the future, fully digitalized operations in the Nuremberg rural hospitals are to be implemented by 2025. With the electronic patient file, the clinic creates opportunities for comprehensive data availability. These factors are not only essential for contemporary patient care, but also make clinical and administrative processes much easier.

Investments in the future

In addition, the clinic will invest in system modules for audit-proof archives and data warehousing. This project is being carried out by a five-person project management team led by Dr. Wolfgang Parsch monitors. Even if the SAP software remains responsible for logistical processes, the aim is to fully implement the KIS Orbis by October 2025. The clinic decided to make this change two years ago in order to optimally prepare for the challenges posed by the phase-out of the SAP platform ISH.

As @klinikum-nuernberg.de explains, the new system will not only improve the processes in the clinic itself; Uniform standards and a modern IT architecture will also be created, which could enable cross-location research projects with partners such as the Paracelsus Medical Private University in the future. AI-based decision support will also help identify risks at an early stage and optimize the medication process.

In summary, it can be said that the Nuremberg Clinic has taken a strong step into the digital future with the introduction of the KIS Orbis. The rapid implementation thanks to the intensive collaboration of everyone involved not only represents progress in digital transformation, but also positions the clinic as a pioneer in the German healthcare system.
