Emotional performance of A Child of Our Time at the ION music festival!

On August 13, 2025, the Munich Radio Orchestra and the BR Choir will perform the impressive oratorio “A Child of Our Time” by Michael Tippett as part of the ION music festival in Nuremberg. This important work, which premiered in 1944, addresses humanity, reconciliation and the will to overcome in a time of violence and oppression during Nazi rule. Tippett also deals with the horrors of National Socialism and uses the Grynszpan assassination attempt of 1938 as the central impetus for his oratorio, which led to Kristallnacht and the further persecution of the Jews. The piece therefore remains very relevant even 81 years after its premiere and combines historical narratives with universal human experiences.

The concert is framed by an impressive ensemble consisting of Karen Cargill (mezzo-soprano), Barry Banks (tenor) and Andrew Hamilton (baritone). The musical direction is the responsibility of Patrick Hahn, while the choir was rehearsed by Florian Helgath. How Rundfunkorchester.de reported, the structure of the work is in three parts: from an introduction that describes the violent, godless time, to the turbulent action of the protagonist “the boy,” to a final part that reflects the tragedy of the event.

Artists and their achievements

Standing out among the contributors are the voices of Barry Banks and Andrew Hamilton, both of whom can look back on impressive careers. musikfest-ion.de highlights that Banks is a Grammy-nominated tenor whose technique and musicianship have performed in major opera houses such as the Bavarian State Opera and the Metropolitan Opera. Andrew Hamilton, a former member of the Bavarian State Opera Opera Studio, is also recognized for his impressive performances.

At the same time, Karen Cargill, the mezzo-soprano, is also well known in the scene. She brings her rich voice and distinct expressiveness to the performance. Additionally, Elizabeth Llewellyn, acclaimed singer and recipient of the MBE for her services to classical music, will appear in the piece.

About the oratorio

Tippett's oratorio impresses with its formal connection to classical models such as Handel's “Messiah” and Bach. During the composition process, Tippett looked to spirituals to illuminate the underlying human experiences. In this tradition, the work reflects both the identity-forming narratives of the Old Testament and the fates of African Americans and the victims of racism. Particularly noteworthy is the use of five spirituals, which are central to the thematic orientation of the oratorio and which trigger deep human feelings.

Following the performance of “A Child of Our Time”, the Trio Orelon will perform at the Oberstdorf Music Summer. This talented group, which won first prize in piano trio at the ARD International Music Competition in 2023, will present works by Joseph Haydn, Anton Arenski and Ludwig van Beethoven, among others. The evening promises not only cultural significance, but also musical diversity.

Once again it shows how music is capable of moving through time and always remaining relevant - a sign that there is always room for dialogue and reconciliation in art.
