Tradition meets conviviality in Schöllang

The Viehscheid in Schöllang is more than just a return of the herds of cattle; he celebrates a piece of Allgäu customs. Every year the herds of cattle from the Entschenalpe, Gutenalpe, Käseralpe and Seealpe come back and ceremoniously move to Scheidplatz. Around 700 young cattle are welcomed there by the shepherds. The wreath cow, which is decorated with flowers and bells, symbolizes an accident-free Alpine season and attracts everyone's attention.

The handover of the animals to the owners takes place with great tradition, while the animals are distributed to their winter quarters. But the cattle shedding doesn't end there. A festival tent with brass music, delicious Allgäu specialties and a colorful range of handicrafts and regional products transforms Scheidplatz into a place of encounter and cosiness. Here tradition comes to life and the interplay of nature and conviviality is celebrated.

A look back into history

The term “Scheid” refers to the separation of animals from their summer pastures in the Alps. The first written mentions of the Viehscheid in the Allgäu cannot be dated, but the cattle market in Immenstadt held its first big festival on September 20, 1930. It is important to distinguish between Viehscheid and Viehmarkt: The Viehmarkt is often connected to the Viehscheid and represents an important tradition in the region.

Despite the most modern developments in agriculture, the Allgäu remains true to its traditions and customs. Some cattle sheds, such as in Hohenschwangau or Maierhöfe, no longer take place, while new events are being created as part of the Alpine summer. This shows that customs can also be accompanied by changes.

We are looking forward to the approaching Viehscheide and invite everyone to experience the tradition and beauty of the Allgäu at these unique events. For more information about the specific dates and events, see the articles from Allgäu newspaper and Allgäu Viehscheid.
