Thunderstorm chaos in the Allgäu: hail and storms keep the region in suspense

A violent storm hit the Börwang region in the Allgäu on Sunday evening. Residents experienced a tremendous spectacle with heavy rain and monumentally large hail that covered the streets and driveways. Pictures document the impressive amounts of hail that fell here, and the fire department was called upon when broken branches blocked the roads. According to Allgäuer Zeitung, however, things remained quiet at most times and there were no major operations or injuries to report.

In Haldenwang, a fallen tree caused a stir when it fell on a pasture fence and caused some cows to escape. The fire brigade also had to work in several places on the B12 to clear fallen branches. Fortunately, there were no accidents and the police spokesman expressed optimism and spoke of a “normal occurrence of storms”.

Severe weather warnings and impending thunderstorms

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a severe weather warning for the Allgäu, which is valid until Thursday at midnight. This warning signals severe thunderstorms that could move from west to east across the region and bring dangerous weather phenomena. The dangers should not be underestimated: hail with diameters of up to 8 cm and gusts of wind reaching speeds of over 120 km/h are on the list of possible weather events. In the event of intense storms, extremes in the form of hurricane gusts and severe rain between 25 and 40 liters per square meter can also be expected, warns [Merkur](https://www.merkur.de/bayern/schwaben/allgaeu/unwetter-warning-allgaeu-schwer-gewitter-hagel-orkanboeen-mittwoch-regen- Schaden-sturm-kmh-93768634.html).

The severe weather warning applies to large parts of the Allgäu and has reached warning level 3 out of 4. Heavy rain lasting several hours is expected for Monday night and Monday morning, which poses additional risks for people and nature. The chances of damage to infrastructure are high due to the prevailing weather conditions.

With these weather forecasts in mind, it remains to be seen how much further storms will affect the region. Residents and local authorities are definitely advised to be vigilant and exercise caution as the storm front continues to move through the Upper and Lower Allgäu.
