Commuters in Franconia affected: Important railway line temporarily closed!
From September 19th, the railway line between Hersbruck (on the right of the Pegnitz) and Pegnitz in Franconia will be closed until further notice. Deutsche Bahn took this step due to necessary technical inspections on several bridges in the Pegnitztal. Safety concerns were the top priority and the modernizations had been planned for some time. The trains on RE lines 30, 31, 32 and 38, which end in Pegnitz, are affected by this measure.
But what does this mean for travelers? Deutsche Bahn has set up a replacement service: hourly bus connections run from Pegnitz via Neuhaus to Hersbruck. There are also hourly direct bus lines on the routes Bayreuth – Nuremberg, Pegnitz – Nuremberg and Neuhaus – Nuremberg. However, there is an all-clear for commuters traveling between Hersbruck and Nuremberg: the trains on the RE lines 40/41 and the RB trains on the Mittelfrankenbahn continue to run. The Nuremberg S-Bahn also uses the left Pegnitz route.
No time estimate
How long the closure will last is still unclear. Deutsche Bahn is aiming for a quick resumption of train traffic, but has already emphasized that the preliminary planning for the modernization of the Pegnitz bridges is demanding. These challenges are particularly characterized by the topography of Franconian Switzerland as well as high environmental and monument protection requirements that must be observed. The DB regrets the short-term restrictions and apologizes to passengers.
The ongoing major construction sites in the German rail network show that Deutsche Bahn is active not only in Franconia, but throughout Germany. By 2036, over 40 important sections of the route are to be fundamentally renovated, which will result in massive disruptions for millions of travelers. The route between Hamburg and Berlin has also been closed for nine months since August 1, 2025, affecting thousands of commuters who have to expect longer journey times. ADAC has pointed out these and many other construction sites.
For everyone who regularly relies on the train, there is only one thing left to do: find out about the current timetables and possible diversions in good time. The DB offers various information media for this purpose.
