Regensburg inspires: Best Opera House 2025 awarded!

A truly festive occasion for the cultural scene in Regensburg! Today, November 4th, 2025, the Regensburg Theater was named “Best Opera House 2025”. This prestigious award comes from the jury of the “Oper! Awards”, one of the most important international opera awards in Germany. The award ceremony is scheduled for February 23, 2026 in the in-house theater. Regensburg has thus made a name for itself not only as a regional but also as a nationwide cultural highlight.

The jury particularly praised the courage and willingness to take risks of those responsible for the theater. She was also impressed by the innovative program, which focuses on openness in musical theater. Torsten Rasch's opera “The Wonderful Years,” which deals critically with the glorification of the GDR era, was cited as an outstanding example.

Cultural anchoring and community building

Just like the varied repertoire and the strong roots in urban society, the ensemble and the many innovations in the areas of participation, accessibility and sustainability were also positively highlighted. These aspects not only impact visitor numbers, they also create a close connection to the community and bring people together.

The Bavarian Minister of Art Markus Blume did not miss the opportunity to congratulate the theater and described the institution as part of the “first league”. The "Opera! Awards" not only celebrate the big names of the scene, but also support artistic exchange and diversity in the opera landscape.

Past award winners and outlook

The most recent award winners include the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, which was named “Opera House of the Year,” and the celebrated singer Klaus Florian Vogt. With this year's honor, the Regensburg Theater joins an illustrated list of impressive cultural achievements that reflect the high level of European opera culture.

The coming months promise exciting developments at the Regensburg Theater. With a clear focus on innovative programs and a strong connection to the region, the stage will continue to attract many visitors and break new ground in the opera landscape.
