Renovation between Regensburg and Schwandorf: Bus instead of train until August!

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has big plans: from June 15th to August 22nd, the railway line between Regensburg and Schwandorf will be extensively renovated. This means that travelers have to change to buses during this time. This change is a partial measure as part of the modernization of the entire route to Weiden. Train traffic should benefit from the renovation, delayed trains and technical malfunctions should be a thing of the past. The DB is investing around 127 million euros to improve the quality of train traffic and punctuality, as stern.de reports.

The affected buses will replace the regional trains (RE 40, RE 2, RE 25 and RB 23) and run twice an hour between Regensburg and Schwandorf. The journey with the replacement buses will take around 30 minutes longer, but connections in Schwandorf towards Furth im Wald are guaranteed.

Important infrastructure for the region

The route is not only of great importance for commuters and students, it is also part of an important north-south route that connects the seaports with the Alps. The upcoming renovation will also replace the overall heavily used infrastructure on this section, which is currently often prone to disruptions. According to deutschebahn.com, the renovation will also be divided into further sections that will take place over the course of the year:

  • 23. August bis 14. September: Sanierung zwischen Irrenlohe und Weiden
  • 26. September bis 10. Oktober: Sanierung zwischen Schwandorf und Schwarzenfeld
  • 10. bis 31. Oktober: Weichenerneuerung im Hauptbahnhof Regensburg

All measures are designed to keep the disruption to travelers as low as possible. The DB will provide ongoing information about the status of the work and inform residents about any potentially noisy work.

A big step for the future

Deutsche Bahn's infrastructure measures are part of a larger plan in which a total of 16.4 billion euros will flow into the renewal of the rail infrastructure in 2024. The focus is on stopping the deterioration of the infrastructure and reducing tardiness, as explained on tagesschau.de. This includes the renewal of 2,000 kilometers of tracks and numerous train stations. The head of DB-InfraGO, Philipp Nagl, has emphasized that the aging of the railway infrastructure should finally be stopped.

Although travelers must temporarily expect longer journey times and diversions, Deutsche Bahn is doing everything it can to sustainably improve the quality and reliability of train transport. The modernization of the rail network should be completed by 2030 - an ambitious goal that presents both challenges and opportunities.
