Rosenheim Cops star Karin Thaler: Age discrimination in the film business!
The world of television entertainment often shows changing facets and stories from the lives of stars. A notable example is Karin Thaler, who has played the role of city councilor Marie Hofer in the popular ZDF series “The Rosenheim Cops” for almost 25 years. Despite the series' loyal fan base, which has achieved consistently high ratings with around three million viewers since it started in 2002, Thaler is currently confronted with an unpleasant reality: a lack of role offers.
The actress, who turned 60 in June, expresses her concerns that women over 60 are increasingly struggling to find new roles in the film and television industry. Until two years ago she received various offers, but these have now stopped. In an interview with the “Abendzeitung” it becomes clear that Thaler perceives this development as an age problem. “It's because of age,” she is convinced. As soon as you reach the age of 60, the offer dwindles.
Karin Thaler and the future of her career
Despite the setbacks, Thaler is optimistic and sees no reason to despair. She has achieved many of her professional goals in her career and has no reason to be afraid of her existence. “An end to the Rosenheim Cops wouldn’t be the end of the world for me,” she says. With 40 years of experience in front of the camera, Thaler also has the ability to use her time wisely and maintains a desire to explore new opportunities. However, a Hollywood dream that didn't come true doesn't stop her from looking positively into the future.
Although the death of her former colleague Joseph Hannesschläger in 2020 affected the series, it did not have a negative impact on the popularity of “Rosenheim Cops”. Even the announcement by Marisa Burger, who has been playing secretary Miriam Stockl since season 1, that she is giving up her role does not seem to be casting a shadow on the success of the series at the moment. Thaler plans to remain faithful to her role in the series as she currently sees no reason to consider leaving it.
A look behind the scenes
However, the inquiries for new projects do not only seem to affect Thaler. The trend of ineffective role allocation for older women is noticeable throughout the industry. This could spark a broader discussion about the relevance and visibility of older actresses in a medium often associated with youthful freshness.
Thaler remains a well-known face in the community, winning the hearts of many fans. Her honest and upright way of talking about challenges makes her even more likeable to her followers. With her attitude, she also shows a younger generation that big dreams, such as getting involved in Hollywood, should not be forgotten, even if the path to get there is rocky.
Although the industry is changing and new trends are emerging - such as innovative mobile apps and exciting casino offerings currently available to US players - the question remains how this evolution will affect the acting and television business. The debate about age, visibility and possibilities will remain exciting as Karin Thaler remains on the scene for her fans.
