Sacha Boey: From bad purchase to defensive hero – Bayern's miracle run!
FC Bayern Munich has been in remarkable form so far this season. With ten competitive games and an impressive record of only eight goals conceded, the team has won all games. A central player in this success story is Sacha Boey, who, despite his eventful past, has become an indispensable part of the defensive line. The 25-year-old right-back, who was signed from Galatasaray Istanbul in January 2024 for around 30 million euros, has established himself after initial difficulties.
Boey's first few months in Munich were anything but problem-free. Injuries plagued the player, who suffered a total of four serious injuries in his career at FC Bayern. These include a torn muscle fiber, a torn muscle bundle, a torn meniscus and, most recently, a torn ligament in December 2024. In the few appearances he only played 431 minutes and therefore missed 26 competitive games, which initially made him appear to be a bad purchase.
The path to success
But the turning point came: Boey found more playing time under coaches Thomas Tuchel and Vincent Kompany in the last few weeks, especially after the injuries to his teammates. A key moment was his appearance in the DFB Cup, where he won a penalty. Despite a weak game against Augsburg, his form is clearly showing an upward trend. His confidence in his own abilities could make Boey one of the pillars of the defense, as he has already played in almost every game this season.
However, the situation for FC Bayern remains challenging. Despite Boey's recovery, he is now out again due to injury. This time he suffered a ligament injury in his left ankle, which could cost him several weeks of playing time. This injury was sustained in training - a very unfortunate turn of events for Boey and the team, as the right side of defense is already considered a weak point. Coach Vincent Kompany will have to get creative to fill that void, with a possible return of Josip Stanišić looming.
Injuries in professional sports
In this context, reference is also made to the general problem of injuries in professional sports. According to that VBG sports report Football has one of the highest injury rates. On average, players suffer around 2.1 injuries per season, which can lead to significant financial losses for clubs. An additional injured player can cost the club almost €16 million per season, highlighting the importance of preventive measures.
FC Bayern has already taken measures to minimize the susceptibility of their players to injuries, especially the most common injuries such as annoying thigh and ankle injuries. This could be crucial for Boey in the future in order to stay injury-free and support his team in the best possible way.
In view of Boey's development, Max Eberl, FC Bayern's sporting director, recently emphasized that there were no offers for him despite initial thoughts of selling him. The 25-year-old has developed from a problem into one of the key players in Bayern's defense. During his absence, it will be interesting to see how the defense performs in the near future.
The challenges arising from injuries will probably continue to be with us, but hopes remain for Boey's early return and a continued successful season. Thanks to the combination of experience, talent and the right support, Sacha Boey could soon be on the rise again to be available to FC Bayern again.
