Gigabit Internet for Schweinfurt: Fiber optic expansion begins in 2026!

The digital future is just around the corner: From March 2026, Stadtwerke Schweinfurt will begin the next expansion phase of its fiber optic network (FTTH). In the Eselshöhe, Northern District and Northeastern District districts alone, around 2,800 households will finally have access to gigabit-capable Internet. The goal is clear: comprehensive fiber optic coverage in the city should be guaranteed by 2031. As the Stadtwerke Schweinfurt announce, information events for residents and owners are planned for October 22, 2025 to provide information about the expansion and the possibilities.

The offer of a free fiber optic connection during the construction phase is particularly interesting for owners. However, a few steps must be taken into account. First of all, you have to submit the property and building use declaration (GNE) online and then choose a suitable fiber optic tariff. If you forget this first step, you have to be prepared for additional costs if you want to apply for a connection later.

Expansion areas in detail

The expansion areas specifically include the following areas:

  • Eselshöhe: Gebiet südlich der Walther-von-der-Vogelweide-Straße.
  • Nördlicher Stadtteil: Areal südlich des Theuerbrünnleinswegs.
  • Nordöstlicher Stadtteil: Bereiche zwischen Am Oberen Marienbach, Klingenbrunnstraße und rund um das Leopoldina-Krankenhaus.

The vision of the municipal utility is to develop Schweinfurt into a digital model city and to provide over 27,000 households and companies with stable gigabit connections. The network is operated according to the open access principle, which is intended to strengthen the diversity of providers.

Opportunities for fiber optic expansion

Despite the intensive efforts, current studies show that Germany still has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to fiber optic expansion. According to an investigation by SBR-net Consulting AG on behalf of the VATM, the cause lies in the insufficient use of the existing networks. Although cooperation between network operators and service providers is increasing, it is crucial that open access models are promoted in order to maximize the utilization of FTTH networks. As the VATM further explains, these models could help to avoid double expansion and stimulate competition.

Innovative solutions such as “Clearing As A Service” from Conology create an efficient platform between network operators and service providers and also support the necessary automation of processes. These technologies could be crucial to further boost the fiber optic market and make Austrian households fit for the digital future.

The coming months will show whether the initiatives and collaborations in fiber optic expansion are achieving the desired results. However, one thing is clear: time is of the essence and both consumers and providers depend on a more connected future.
