Hammer attack on the ICE: Four injured in a horrific incident in Bavaria!

A violent incident in ICE 91 on Thursday afternoon shocked the region around Straßkirchen in the Straubing-Bogen district. Shortly before 2 p.m., a 20-year-old Syrian man, presumably Mohammed A., attacked passengers with a hammer. Four passengers were injured, with the severity of the injuries varying between mild and moderate. The victims include three other Syrians aged 15, 24 and 51, as well as a 38-year-old man whose nationality is not yet known. Despite the dramatic circumstances, no one's life is in danger, as Bild reports.

Due to the incident, the train, which was on its way from Hamburg to Vienna and was carrying around 500 passengers at the time, had to stop on the open road after some passengers applied the emergency brake. Over 150 emergency services and fire departments rushed to the scene to both treat the injured and secure the crime scene. Deutsche Bahn expressed its sympathy for those affected and praised the rapid response of the emergency services.

Reactions and help on site

After the attack, Deutsche Bahn's emergency management system was activated and immediately set up a care center for the shaken passengers. These measures also include psychosocial support to counteract the emotional aftereffects of such an incident. BR reports that the injured were taken to surrounding hospitals while the police continue to investigate the background to the attack.

It is still unclear how the attacker was able to be overpowered. However, there are indications that other passengers or possibly a Bundeswehr soldier intervened in the altercation. The train is currently idle and the railway line is closed while the investigation continues. Police have emphasized that there is no immediate danger to the population, which should provide some reassurance for travelers and residents.

Psychosocial support in crisis situations

In such turbulent times, the right support for those affected is crucial. The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has set itself the goal of anchoring psychosocial support (MHPSS) in development cooperation. It is important that such programs are also used in crises or refugee situations, as [BMZ](https://www.bmz.de/de/themen/ escape/mhpss) emphasizes. We work with organizations such as UNICEF and UNHCR to evaluate and further develop the effectiveness of such measures.

The scope of the incident in ICE 91 shows once again the need to establish appropriate systems for crisis management and emotional support. The shockwaves caused by such an attack can have far-reaching consequences, both for the victims and for the communities from which they come.
