Tradition revived: EC Straubing gets a modern asphalt track!
Refreshing news from Straubing: The city is pleased about the opening of a new asphalt curling rink, which will pave the way for the Straubing Ice Skating Club (EC) to get back on the track. Unfortunately, the old facility had to give way to the extension of the Johannes-Turmair-Gymnasium, but with this new initiative a successful solution has been found. How regio-aktuell24.de reported, the new track is located between the city gardening warehouse and the Türk Gücü clubhouse.
Mayor Markus Pannermayr was on site at the opening act and emphasized that it was important to create a new home for the stick shooters. “We are pleased that we were able to provide this space for the new cable cars,” said Pannermayr. The EC Straubing, which has made a name for itself as one of the oldest curling clubs in Germany, uses the newly built track as its main user, but it is also available to other groups.
A long tradition
The EC Straubing can look back on an exciting history. With over 60 members active in three teams, the club has already collected numerous championship titles in the Bundesliga South and German championships in the past. What is particularly striking is the fact that the club qualified for the 1936 Olympics, but was unable to take part. The club was founded in the 1920s, but the exact date remains unclear. But the fascination for the sport of curling remains unbroken to this day, as it probably has its origins as early as the 13th century stockschiessen.esv-ingolstadt.de executes.
Stock sport is particularly popular in the foothills of the Alps, Austria and Holland and has a tradition. In Germany, the competition has been organized since the 1960s by the German Ice Stock Association (DESV), which is a member of the German Olympic Sports Confederation. It is noteworthy that although curling has never been an Olympic sport, it is still practiced regularly in many countries and on different continents.
The new facility
The new asphalt track not only has a ten centimeter thick base layer, but also a six centimeter thick top layer, which ensures the best playing comfort. Markings have already been applied and a garage for the club's equipment is also available. A public toilet is also set up for users in the Türk Gücü clubhouse, which makes the location even more pleasant. Lighting, seating and waste bins will also be installed in the near future to further increase comfort.
Jörg Bär, the head of the city gardening department, regrets the loss of storage space, but at the same time is pleased that the EC Straubing now has a modern and attractive home. Sports department head Michael Schröder has indicated that an occupancy board for the lanes will be set up shortly in order to organize and optimize use. If that doesn't sound like a successful restart!
The new summer stock track in Straubing is not only a milestone for the EC Straubing, but also a benefit for the entire community and shows how tradition and modernization can go hand in hand!
