New topic of conversation: pastoral care at the cemetery starts in Traunstein!

A new discussion offer brings a breath of fresh air to pastoral care for seniors in the Traunstein district. From November 1st, in the week before All Saints' Day, the project “Open ears, open hearts – encounters and conversations at the cemetery” starts in order to offer everyone a place for exchange and reflection. The pastors are available at 20 selected municipal and community cemeteries to conduct confidential discussions and accompany citizens during this often emotional time. Everyone is warmly invited, regardless of their religious affiliation.

The offer was created because many people visit the graves of their deceased before All Saints' Day and may feel the need for a confidential conversation during this time. The project is supported by Dean Dr. Florian Schomers and the pastors Christina Fraunhofer, Waltraud Jetz-Deser, Barbara Burghartswieser and Deacon Andreas Nieder, who run it. “We look forward to the citizens accepting the offer to talk,” said the pastors.

Pastors at 20 locations

A total of 15 pastors - priests, deacons as well as community and pastoral advisors - will work at various locations in the district. The participating cemeteries are located in:

  • Altenmarkt
  • Bergen
  • Chieming
  • Eisenärzt
  • Grabenstätt
  • Grassau
  • Inzell
  • Kirchanschöring
  • Obing
  • Raiten
  • Rottau
  • St. Georgen
  • Schleching
  • Tittmoning
  • Traunstein
  • Traunwalchen
  • Traunreut
  • Trostberg
  • Truchtlaching
  • Waging am See

The pastors will be identified by the diocese's eye-catching apricot-colored umbrellas. Together they bring their hands and hearts together to support people in this contemplative time and to counteract lonely grief.

A network of support

The initiative in Traunstein is not just a local event. In the background there is a strong senior pastoral network that is active in many dioceses. For example, the senior pastoral care department of the Archdiocese of Vienna offers comprehensive support and advice for older people. The focus here is on promoting coexistence between generations and strengthening faith. Contact with those responsible in Vienna is also possible through various contacts, such as the telephone and email contacts of Beatrix Auer and Andrea Coulon. [erzdiozese-wien.at]

The “Open Ear, Open Heart” project shows how important personal exchange is for older people and that there is always room for conversation, no matter where we are. The response from the parishes in Traunstein has been consistently positive, and the pastors are looking forward to responding to the wishes and needs of the people and having an open ear.
