Dagmar Fritz-Kramer: The sustainable voice of the Lower Allgäu awarded!

Dagmar Fritz-Kramer, the managing director of Baufritz, has taken on an outstanding role in the world of sustainable building. She was recently honored as “Brand Ambassador of the Unterallgäu District,” an honor that District Administrator Alex Eder greatly appreciated. Fritz-Kramer's pioneering spirit and tireless commitment to ecological house building make her a true pioneer in the industry. Since 2004, she has been the fourth generation to run the family business, which was founded in 1896, and has always advocated for sustainable innovations. Baufritz is considered one of the leading companies in the field of ecological house building and relies on energy-efficient, resource-saving construction methods.

Her achievements have already been recognized with the German Environmental Prize 2023 from the German Federal Environmental Foundation, which she won together with the climate scientist Prof. Dr. Friederike Otto received. In his laudatory speech, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier praised their pioneering work in the field of energy-efficient construction and emphasized the importance of their work in times of climate change. The construction and building sector is responsible for almost 40% of greenhouse gas emissions in Germany, which is one more reason to promote sustainability in the construction industry, as the sustainable building platform also states.

Baufritz: A pioneer in the construction industry

Baufritz specializes in climate- and environmentally friendly prefabricated timber construction and processes around 11,900 m³ of local spruce wood every year. This practice not only helps store carbon, but also helps reduce annual CO2 emissions by an estimated 12,000 tons. The company is committed to promoting recycling and resource conservation in the construction industry. “We have to accept the challenges of the construction sector and actively shape changes,” says Fritz-Kramer.

Under her leadership, Baufritz has developed innovative strength not only in energy efficiency, but also in the circular economy. In 2019, the company achieved the highest quality level for health-certified construction in Germany and in 2023 it was awarded the Gold Award by the Bavarian State Government for its commitment to environmental and climate protection. Baufritz currently employs around 600 people at the Erkheim location and therefore plays a relevant role as an employer in the Lower Allgäu.

A look into the future of the construction industry

The challenges are great and there is an urgent need for sustainable solutions in construction. Studies such as those from the Ruhr University Bochum show that the increased use of wood as a building material could save up to 42 million tons of greenhouse gases by 2030. These developments would not only benefit the environment, but would also sustainably increase the quality of life of people in the regions.

Fritz-Kramer is committed to ensuring that innovative approaches to describing and evaluating the contribution of buildings to sustainable development are harmonized internationally. In this way, better transparency and traceability of information and results could be achieved. After all, the construction industry is not only responsible for creating living spaces, but also for the sustainable use of our resources. This insight is essential in the industry in order to actively shape the change that lies ahead.

Fritz-Kramer and her company are not only an example of the successful combination of tradition and innovation, but also a driving force that is sustainably transforming the industry.
