A worrying phenomenon
Unfortunately, such incidents are not isolated. A current study by the Central Institute for Mental Health in Mannheim shows that one in five women in Germany have been victims of sexual violence as children and adolescents. A total of 5.7 million people in Germany experienced such acts as minors. What is particularly worrying is that among young women aged 18 to 29 the proportion is as high as 27.4 percent. These figures clearly show the dark area of sexual violence, which still exists despite growing awareness and prevention measures. daily news reports on the dimensions and the associated challenges.
The study also finds that 95 percent of the perpetrators are men and only 4.5 percent of those affected experience sexual violence by women. Only a fraction of victims have dared to share their experiences, often because of fear and shame. It is an alarming signal that is rippling through society and shows that more protection and support for young people is needed.
The incident in Ottobeuren is a clear wake-up call. More must be done to protect our young people and continue to raise awareness of sexual violence.
