Discover monuments: A day full of history in the Weilheim district!
On September 14, 2025, the Weilheim district will ring in the Open Monument Day under the motto: “Valuable, priceless or irreplaceable”. This promises an exciting insight into the fascinating history and culture of the region. The event takes place throughout Germany and is organized by the German Foundation for Monument Protection. The aim is to highlight the value of monuments to society - both ideally and monetarily. Historical buildings are not only evidence of the past, but also important places that need to be preserved, as weilheim-schongau.de explains.
Visitors have the opportunity to explore various monuments in the district. One of the highlights is the more than 500-year-old Egyptian water pipe on Frauenberg in Schongau. This extraordinary attraction supplies the city with up to 100 liters of water per minute and provides insights into the engineering skills of past centuries. City archivist Franz Grundner will guide interested guests on Sunday at 10 and 11 a.m. through this historic water pipe, which was in operation for over 400 years and was only decommissioned in 1900 merkur.de.
Diverse offers and guided tours
The program also includes guided tours of the Collegiate Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Rottenbuch, which can also be visited. This church, which looks back on a proud 900 years of history, opens with a celebratory service at 10 a.m. and offers a concert with the famous Freywis organ at 7 p.m. The church of St. Anna im Felde in Burggen and the historic farmhouse, built in 1848, also invite you to take guided tours, which take place at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Another highlight is the St. Ursula Chapel in Hohenfurch, where a guided tour is offered at 10 a.m. These places are real treasures and make the Open Monument Day an absolute experience for history buffs and curious visitors, as weiltheim-schongau.de reports.
In Weilheim itself, the large Hochlandhalle opens its doors with guided tours at 2 and 4 p.m. The Wessobrunners experience guided tours of the Roman Tower and the Kreuzberg Chapel, which are held every hour from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. This allows visitors to stroll, explore and celebrate the heritage of their region.
Digital support for Monument Day
To make the day even more colorful, there is the option of planning your personal open monument day using an app. This application provides information about all open monuments, their stories and programs. It also offers an interactive map showing participating monuments, as well as route planning and reminders for upcoming events. This makes the trip not only informative, but also comfortable, as described in detail on tag-des-offenen-denkmals.de.
Be there and enjoy the insights into the valuable history of your region - the Open Monument Day invites everyone to get to know and preserve the treasures of the past!
