New Eger cycle path in the Fichtelgebirge: A paradise for cyclists!
A new Eger cycle path has been opened in the picturesque Fichtel Mountains, taking cyclists on an unforgettable journey along the river of the same name. This approximately 55 kilometer long route stretches from Bad Weißenstadt to the German-Czech border in Schirnding and boasts breathtaking landscapes and numerous sights. The cycle path, which has been developed since 2013 in close cooperation with several municipalities and the Wunsiedel district, would like to thank you for the support and the provision of funding, which covered two thirds of the total costs of 12.5 million euros. This is reported by Merkur.
To mark the official opening, special celebrations took place in the region, including a church service and guided bike tours, which attracted many interested people. District Administrator Peter Berek emphasized the importance of the cycle path not only for tourism, but also for environmental protection and improving the quality of life of the residents. “There is something going on here,” said Berek, who emphasized the positive effects of such projects.
Diverse opportunities for discovery
The Eger cycle path offers cyclists the opportunity to explore the beautiful meadow landscape, while in some sections it runs directly along the river. There are numerous rest areas, dining options and overnight accommodations along the route, perfect for a relaxed tour. Lake Weißenstädter See, Hohenberger Castle and the Porcelain Museum in Hohenberg are just a few highlights along the way that are worth discovering. The famous Twelve Peak View, which offers a wonderful view of the Fichtelgebirge, should not be missing on any route, as Fichtelgebirge.bayern notes.
The entire route leads through flora-fauna-habitat protected areas, which are home to multi-rare animals and plants, including the sand lizard. The protected areas were created in close coordination with nature conservation authorities in order to preserve the unique nature and at the same time offer cyclists a pleasant experience. The cycle path is largely passable, with occasional differences in elevation, but does not offer any extreme inclines, making it accessible to all ages. There are also ten information boards and QR codes placed along the route that provide exciting information about the Eger and its historical significance, according to BR.
International connections
A special treat at the end of the route is the transition to the Czech side, where an existing cycle path leads up to 200 kilometers further to Litoměřice, where the Eger flows into the Elbe. This Czech cycle route is an important part of European cycling and therefore offers an adventure not only for locals but also for international cyclists.
Whether for a day trip or a longer bike tour - the new Eger cycle path offers the perfect opportunity to experience the beautiful nature of the Fichtelgebirge while spending a relaxing time outdoors. Pack your bikes, nature is calling!
