Gigantic windjammer festival: 1.2 million guests await Sail 2025!
A very special event is just around the corner in Bremerhaven: from August 13th to 17th the Sail2025, one of the largest windjammer meetings in the world, his return. For six days, the city will welcome the majestic sailing beauties on the Weser and is expecting around 1.2 million visitors. This large maritime festival only takes place every five years and after the pandemic-related cancellation in 2020, the people of Bremerhaven are looking forward to the numerous ships and festivities.
The anticipation is already high, as over 250 historic expedition ships, including impressive windjammers from 17 nations, are expected. The entry parade, a highlight of the Sail, is led by the Bremerhaven three-masted barque “Alexander von Humboldt II”. At the ceremonial start, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will open the parade on the “Gorch Fock”, the German Navy’s training ship. This promises to be a majestic sight as the ships sail into port, offering visitors a taste of maritime tradition.
Global ship diversity and special highlights
There are some real celebrities among the participating ships. The largest and fastest sailing training ship in South America, the “Unión” from Peru, will also be represented, as will the “Shabab Oman II” from Oman, the Royal Navy barque. These are joined by the “Sagres II” from Portugal, the oldest ship in the Portuguese Navy, and the “Nao Santa Maria”, an impressive replica of Christopher Columbus' famous ship.
Visitors can look forward to a colorful program. Varied concerts on seven stages with artists such as Ronan Keating, No Angels and Johannes Oerding provide musical entertainment. In addition, a buccaneering village will be built in a medieval style, offering numerous hands-on activities and market stalls. There is an extensive children's program for the little ones, so that the whole family gets their money's worth.
Celebrations for all the senses
The Sail will not only be a feast for the eyes, but also a feast for the senses. Culinary highlights are also provided. Visitors can look forward to numerous dining options in the harbor. If you want to experience the maritime flair up close, you also have the opportunity to take part in trips on the Weser, where both sailing ships and motorboats are used.
On Saturday evening, the spectacle will be crowned with an impressive laser show and a large fireworks display that will light up the sky over Bremerhaven at 11 p.m.
Another important aspect is inclusion: trips for wheelchair users with accompaniment are offered, supported by the Inclusive Sailing for All association. An awareness team will also be present on the Sail to provide safety and support in the event of abusive behavior and discrimination, identified by purple vests.
In total, the city is investing around 3 million euros in the Sail, of which 1.1 million euros are provided by the state of Bremen. The organizers are hoping for a colorful success and a turnover of around 60 million euros, which underlines the economic importance of this maritime festival.
