New biodiversity at Lucie-Flechtmann-Platz: Pikopark is being built in Bremen!
Lucie-Flechtmann-Platz in Bremen, an often neglected place with too many cobblestones, will soon have a new look. The Cultivated Plants Association has already unsealed and planted a large part of this area, and an exciting greening project is in the starting blocks. In an area of 700 square meters, which is officially considered a pedestrian zone, the association plans to expand the usage agreement with the city in order to further advance the design.
The particular focus is on the creation of a Pikopark, which will serve as a small, natural green space in the middle of the urban environment. This park should not only provide a place for people to stay, but also act as a new home for numerous plants and animals. The planting is specifically aimed at native species from northern Germany in order to promote local biodiversity. The aim is to integrate higher and lower trees, wildflowers, perennials and grasses in different layers.
New living spaces in the cityscape
Pikoparks are not a new concept. They represent an innovative type of nature-based park, ranging in size from 300 to 500 square meters. According to the People and Environment Foundation They aim to create habitats for animals and significantly improve the quality of life in residential areas. These small oases contain, among other things, dead wood, natural stone walls and piles of stones that enrich the ecosystem and support a variety of species.
In Bremen, however, the Pikopark on the “little Lucie” will not promote vegetable cultivation, but will instead focus on biodiversity. Among other things, new nesting boxes for birds and seating for residents are planned. A small pond is also on the wish list, but its condition is still uncertain. The funds available from the Environment Ministry's “Natural Climate Protection Action Program” amount to 250,000 euros, with the environmental authority also covering its own contribution of around 25,000 euros. These funds are invested in planning, unsealing, replanting and initial care.
A project with vision
The unsealing measures at Lucie-Flechtmann-Platz are scheduled to begin in spring 2026 and be completed by mid-2027. This means that the Pikopark will not only be a beautiful place in the city, but also an important climate protector. The space is deliberately designed so that treetops shade at least half of the area in order to sustainably support environmental measures. Rainwater should seep into the ground and thus relieve the burden on the sewage system. This is particularly important in view of the urban challenges, as more than three quarters of people in Germany now live in cities. The Biological diversity has shown that natural green spaces not only increase the quality of life, but also promote health, relaxation and social encounters.
Volunteer city gardeners will take over the subsequent maintenance of the Pikopark, including collecting rubbish and watering. The project also offers residents the opportunity to actively participate in shaping their surroundings. Those interested can contact by email mail@lucie-bremen.de contact to take part in gardening. This will not only create a beautiful park, but also a living example of community and environmental awareness.
