DFB women defeat Denmark: on the way to the quarter-finals!

The German women won an exciting 2-1 victory in the European Championship preliminary round game against Denmark in Basel's Sankt-Jakob-Park. With 34,165 spectators, a new record was set for European Championship preliminary round games without host participation. National coach Christian Wück, who is taking his first steps as head coach of the women's team, only made one change to the starting line-up: Carlotta Wamser replaced the injured captain Giulia Gwinn. Despite this change, the team initially struggled to find its way into the game, which was due to both defensive problems and technical inaccuracies. After an early finish by Lea Schüller, which was narrowly missed by Klara Bühl, Denmark took the lead in the 26th minute when Amalie Vangsgaard intercepted a German counterattack and executed it coldly.

While the German team missed several opportunities in the first half, it should be noted that a goal from Bühl was disallowed for offside in the 18th minute. The German offensive had further chances before half-time, but was unable to equalize. After the break, the players showed a significantly improved performance and equalized in the 56th minute with a penalty from Sjoeke Nüsken. The support in the team was noticeable, and nine minutes later Schüller made the final score 2-1 after being served exemplary by Jana Brand.

The look forward

In the 70th minute, Schüller almost added more, but her header went wide of the goal. The game as a whole was characterized by several breaks in treatment, which disrupted the rhythm of both teams. With this victory, Germany took an important step towards the quarter-finals. In order to qualify early, the team will now have to hope for Sweden to win against Poland or a draw.

Christian Wück, who has already achieved great success as coach of the U17, sees the potential of his team, which was also visible at the Olympic Games. “The potential for success is there,” he said. The European Championship in Switzerland is now the first big test of his term in office and he is convinced that his players are capable of showing top performances. The focus is on promoting young talent and giving them playing time at a high level.

With further group games against Sweden, a nerve-wracking program awaits the DFB team. The next match will take place on Friday against Poland. Wück emphasizes the importance of creating a suitable framework for the players to be able to exploit their full potential. In this regard, he is confident and is looking forward to pursuing his path together with the team. Who knows, maybe the German women will even win the trophy in the end.
