Gas storage in Germany: filling level drops to 75.82 percent

The gas storage level in Germany is currently 75.82 percent (as of October 16, 2025). This means that it has fallen by 0.10 percent compared to the previous day, indicating continuous withdrawal to meet demand. Interestingly, the filling level at the beginning of the month was slightly higher at 76.73 percent. For comparison: on September 1st the filling level was 70.65 percent, and in August it was only 60.55 percent. Looking back at the past year, the filling level reached 91 percent at the beginning of January 2025.

But what does it look like over the course of the year? The German gas supply has experienced exciting fluctuations. In 2024, Germany consumed a total of 844 terawatt hours of gas - that's 3.5 percent more than in the previous year and, with 61 percent of total consumption, the majority fell on industry. Households and businesses account for a significant share of gas demand at 39 percent. Gas consumption was particularly high in the cold months of January and February, while the summer months had the lowest consumption on average.

Sustainable security of supply

However, the federal government is optimistic that the gas supply will remain stable. Germany has sharply reduced its gas supplies from Russia and now sources most of its natural gas from Norway, the Netherlands and Belgium. Liquefied natural gas terminals, operational since 2023, support the procurement of gas and improve the country's security of supply. Despite the challenges, thanks to new technologies and infrastructure, Germany has a good framework for action to overcome possible bottlenecks.

The gas storage facilities have proven in recent years that they are efficient: They can cover Germany's gas needs over a period of around two months in particularly cold winter months. According to the law, certain filling levels must be reached for this - the filling level should be at least 75 percent on September 1st, 85 percent on October 1st and even 95 percent on November 1st. Germany's filling level is currently below the average for the years 2017 to 2021, which is not surprising given the colder winter and high gas consumption.

Outlook and challenges

The energy transition brings not only challenges, but also opportunities. Total gas consumption in Germany fluctuates greatly, heavily influenced by seasonal changes and weather conditions. Current gas imports average 16.5 terawatt hours per week, reflecting the increase in overall consumption in winter. Despite the existing gas storage facilities and the stable supply, the situation is not relaxed everywhere: Germany's largest gas storage facility in Rehden is currently only 2 percent full, which is still no reason for concern for the federal government.

The strategic decisions to reduce dependence on Russian gas and the increased focus on alternative suppliers show that Germany is willing to remain able to act even in times of crisis. Even if gas storage numbers are currently below average, the coming winters can be tackled well with a solid plan and the aggressive use of the new LNG terminals and thus overcome the challenges ahead.
