Magical nights in Hamburg: Harry Potter celebrates 10 years of theatrical magic!

On July 10, 2025, the magic could be felt in Hamburg. The Theater at the wholesale market celebrated its 10th anniversary with a spectacular performance of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.” The star guest of the evening, Tom Felton, known as Draco Malfoy, together with the theater director Marcel Neitzel, presented a charity check for 25,000 euros, which will be used to benefit children and youth projects run by Aktion Mensch.

Located in the listed walls, which once served as a market for flowers, fruit and vegetables, the theater has captivated visitors of all ages since it opened in 2015. The play picks up the story almost 20 years after Harry, Hermione and Ron saved Hogwarts. The focus is on Albus Severus, Harry Potter's youngest son, who embarks on a risky adventure mixing the past with the present - supported by an orphaned time-turner.

A magical theater experience

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is more than just a play; it is an immersive experience. The production not only impresses with captivating depictions of Dementors and other popular characters from the Harry Potter trilogy, but also with impressive magic and surprising effects on stage. Particularly worth mentioning is the musical accompaniment by Imogen Heap, which underlines the emotional depth of the production. The play, which originally premiered on Broadway, has already won several awards worldwide, including nine Olivier Awards and six Tony Awards, and is also known in Hamburg as an outstanding live event.

The most recent version of the piece, which has been performed in a one-part form since February 2023, lasts approximately three hours and 30 minutes - including an intermission. The more! Theater am Großmarkt was completely rebuilt and required investments of 45 million euros to take the audience into the magical world of Harry Potter. In this unique setting, you can even enjoy Bertie Bott's Beans and Butterbeer while immersing yourself in the magical story.

The plot and the protagonists

Considered the eighth story in the Harry Potter saga, the play's action takes place 19 years after the final events of the books. Harry Potter is now 37 years old, a father of three and works in the Ministry of Magic. His son Albus Severus faces the challenge of following in his father's footsteps while dealing with the pressures that come with that legacy. Things get particularly exciting when Albus befriends Scorpius, Draco Malfoy's son, and steals a time turner. This decision puts the peace of the entire country at risk and triggers a series of magical and dark adventures.

In this context, Hamburg has already been referred to as the “Harry Potter capital,” and a world record from 2023 was particularly impressive, when many people appeared at the Rathausmarkt dressed as Harry Potter. It becomes clear that the fascination for Harry Potter remains alive in the Hanseatic city and the Theater am Großmarkt plays a central role in this magical world.

Let's hope that the theater continues to attract many visitors and keeps the magic of the Harry Potter universe alive for years to come. A good reason to secure your tickets and immerse yourself in the exciting world of Albus Potter and his friends!
