Winter service: Frankfurt drivers master braking on black ice!
In the cold season, it is essential for road safety that winter service vehicles are optimally prepared for the treacherous road conditions. The ADAC therefore regularly carries out driving safety training courses that help drivers improve their skills. Ten employees of Frankfurter Disposal and Service GmbH (FES) are currently undergoing such training in Gründau. They are there to test their braking distances on a specially prepared slide under the guidance of experts.
On an 80-meter-long and 10-meter-wide ice rink that has been transformed into a slide using spray mist, riders learn the importance of developing responsiveness in winter conditions. Driver Marcel Sifrin, who has only been working for FES for two months, provides an impressive example. At speeds of 26 km/h the braking distance is already 25 meters, which increases to almost 80 meters at 50 km/h. This shows how crucial it is to behave correctly behind the wheel, especially when the roads are often slippery at 4 a.m.
Driver training for the winter
The winter training is not only very important for the experienced FES employees, but is also aimed at all drivers. Through special programs offered by the ADAC, drivers can learn to safely control the vehicle in wet, snow and ice. The training sessions are led by experienced instructors and include exercises on slippery surfaces and avoiding water hazards. Participants learn how to react in dangerous situations and which techniques can help you avoid accidents.
- Maximal 12 Teilnehmer pro Gruppe für individuelle Betreuung
- Leihfahrzeuge je nach Verfügbarkeit verfügbar
- Vorbereitung auf winterliche Fahrbedingungen und deren Herausforderungen
It is particularly important that the training is also suitable for new drivers and older drivers. The goal is clear: to minimize the risk of accidents in winter weather. The cost of training can be over 130 to 150 euros, but it's worth it to get through the cold season safely.
Winter service and safety
Christoph Rembow, who heads winter service at FES, knows about the challenges. On average, more than 1,050 kilometers of streets in Frankfurt have to be cleared regularly. This makes it all the more important that the staff is trained in how to use the vehicles. The Mercedes Actros that are in use weigh 26 tons and are equipped with the latest technology. The plan is to conduct a training refresh next year to continue to keep drivers up to date.
Finally, it remains to be said that driving safety training is a valuable component for all road users. Whether for personal or professional reasons, safe winter driving should be on everyone's agenda. Those interested can find further information on the ADAC website or in various driving safety centers in Germany.
