Brandsburgscheune in Alten-Buseck: Renovation as a route to the village meeting place!

The Brandsburgscheune in Alten-Buseck has received a new coat of paint: the partial renovation of the south and west facades has been completed since mid-May 2025. Built around 1740, the historic barn is one of the true gems of the Buseck community. In May, Mayor Michael Ranft and the members of the support association were proud to present the results of the extensive renovation work at a press event. The south and west facades were provided with high-quality natural slate and now shine in new splendor. In total, around 150 square meters of slate were re-roofed after the damaged cladding was removed, such as the Giessen General reported.

The Nachtigall company from Rabenau carried out the work, but unpleasant surprises arose during the dismantling: more oak beams were damaged and partly infected with fungus than originally expected. This discovery resulted in additional costs of around 17,000 euros, so that the total cost of the facade renovation is now around 80,000 euros. The remaining north facade, which appears to have been somewhat neglected, is still awaiting renovation.

Planned use as a village meeting point

The goal of the renovation work is clear: the Brandsburgscheune should serve as a village meeting point in the future. The support association, which was founded in 2014, has set itself the goal of using the historic barn as a meeting place for events. The ground floor currently offers space for around 40 people and is already used for readings and other cultural events. However, further steps for repairs are still unclear and depend on the municipality's budget situation.

The mayor Manfred Buhl expresses his support for the support association and emphasizes that more life should come into the barn. “We would like the Brandsburgscheune to become a place for the community,” said Buhl. The chairman of the support association, Jürgen Herfurth, is struggling with health problems, but is planning a large number of new events in 2026 in order to offer the village community a lively program. Jan-Patrick Wismar would also like to launch a fundraising campaign and is planning to give a lecture on the village's history.

Promoting monument protection

Not only the initiative of the community is crucial for the preservation of the Brandsburgscheune, but also the support of the German Foundation for Monument Protection, which is committed to the preservation of monuments. The foundation supports around 600 renovation projects throughout Germany five times a year. The aim of this organization is to support private initiatives and associations such as the support association so that the preservation of historical buildings can be secured in the long term denkmalschutz.de informed.

Overall, the Brandsburgscheune is more than just a building - it is a symbol of the community in Alten-Buseck and a place where culture and cohesion can flourish. The renovations are an important step into the future and many eyes will now be on the next steps.
