MilkyWays in Gießen: The little cheerleaders rock the stage!
Something is happening in the area of cheerleading in Giessen! On August 15, 2025, the newest performance team, the MilkyWays from GalaxyCheer Gießen, was introduced. This team consists of talented children born between 2013 and 2018 who prepare with a lot of enthusiasm and commitment for regular primary level 1 championships. The children show impressive performances and a remarkable stage presence that is astonishing for their young age. Their cohesion is often described as what is called a small family, which is crucial not only to the team dynamic but also to their success. Training takes place in Gießen, and for further information you can email cheerleading@gtc74.de or visit the Instagram page @galaxycheergiessen. But what exactly is cheerleading? This activity, in which participants are known to cheer for their teams, consists of a colorful mix of chants, physical activity and sophisticated routines. These usually last one to three minutes and include elements such as tumbling, dancing, jumping, cheering and stunts. Cheerleading has its origins in the USA and is practiced there particularly in conjunction with American football and basketball. But this sport is also gaining increasing attention internationally. For example, cheerleaders were introduced for the first time at the 2007 ICC Twenty20 Cricket World Cup in South Africa.
International trend and local initiatives
Cheerleading's popularity has also increased outside of the United States in recent years. There are now numerous teams and competitions in Australia, Mexico and Great Britain, while the International Cheer Union (ICU) National Cheerleading Program already represents 116 member nations and approximately 7.5 million participants worldwide. The prospect of possible inclusion as an official discipline in the Olympics is also being discussed after ICU was recognized by the IOC in 2016. However, attention is also drawn to the high injury rate, which is particularly common among women.
The formation of the MilkyWays team is a positive example for sport, especially in Giessen. The children not only benefit from the physical activity, but also from the team-building activities that cheerleading brings with it. In a world where sport is often perceived as competition, this young group shows that it is also about community and the joy of movement.
