Sound highlights: hunting horn competition thrills in Eichenzell!

Music and hunting – they go together like a bow and arrow. This became particularly clear at this year's national hunting horn blowing competition, which took place on July 19, 2025 in the impressive baroque Fasanerie Palace in Eichenzell. Around 1,000 wind players came together to show their talents and keep the tradition of blowing the hunting horn alive. The organizer was the German Hunting Association (DJV), which organizes this event every two years. The competition attracts practitioners from different states and even neighboring countries. Groups from eight DJV state hunting associations, as well as one group each from Bavaria and Switzerland, took part. What a feast for the ears and eyes!

Tradition is very important: The weekend started with the Hessian state competition, followed by the actual national competition for the par force horns tuned in E flat. Here, 17 C and B groups gave their best, including five groups from other federal states. It was exciting to see which talents shone on the castle stage. 25 of a total of 45 brass groups traveled as guest groups to play in a festive setting and compete for fame and honor.

The winners of the competition

The results show how high the musical standards were. In the C class, the Gelnhausen brass group became state champions, followed by the group from Melsungen, which became runner-up. The brass group from Barneführerholz-Wardenburg (Lower Saxony) came in second place, tied with Melsungen. In the B class, the Upper Hesse Hunters' Association triumphed and secured first place. Behind them were the groups from Hameln-Pyrmont and Hubertus Büdingen. The imagination and passion of the participants filled the air with a unique atmosphere.

Another highlight of the weekend was the final blowing under the direction of Federal Wind Instrument Chairman Jürgen Keller, who was awarded the DJV Gold Badge of Honor by DJV President Helmut Dammann-Tamke that evening. The award ceremony was supported by Professor Dr. Jürgen Ellenberger (LJV Hessen) and State Secretary Michael Ruhl, which gave the ceremony additional splendor.
