Cycling accidents are increasing

These incidents are part of a worrying trend affecting many cyclists. According to a study by insurers' accident research (UDV), bicycle accidents without external influence are on the rise, especially in the winter months. Statistics from 2023 show that around 27,400 cycling accidents occurred without anyone else involved, with around 6,400 people being seriously injured and 147 even losing their lives. The consequences of collisions with cars are particularly serious, with 5,112 serious injuries and 178 deaths occurring last year. Tagesschau reports on...

One reason for the increase in accidents could be the increasingly popular use of Pedelecs, which are often heavier and enable faster acceleration, making them more difficult to handle for many cyclists. Almost two thirds of the cyclists affected stated that their driving style contributed to the accident, and almost one in three people who were alone in the accident were driving too fast for the respective situation. These developments make it clear that road safety for cyclists needs to be improved as well as awareness of safe driving needs to be raised in order to counteract the increasing number of accidents. Clear calls to improve the infrastructure have already been made - including from the UDV, which is suggesting that barriers at crossings be removed.
