MT Melsungen is moving to the Nordhessen Arena in 2027 – a milestone for Kassel!
A big step for MT Melsungen: The handball Bundesliga team will play its home games in the newly designed Nordhessen Arena in Kassel from the 2027/28 season. This decision was made during a press conference and marks a significant change for the club, which has called the Rothenbach Hall home for 20 years. The contracts with Messe Kassel GmbH, the operator of the Rothenbach Hall, expire in June 2027, which determines the time until the move. The Nordhessen Arena, which is only five minutes away from the previous venue, offers not only increased spectator capacity but also more attractive conditions for players, fans and sponsors. According to nh24.de, MT expects financial benefits from the possible higher income and improved marketing opportunities.
Paul Sinizin, the managing director of the Kassel Huskies, is optimistic. Since 2021, he has invested more than 25 million euros in the renovation and expansion of the North Hesse Arena, which is increasingly serving as a multifunctional event hall. “This partnership is a milestone for top-class sport and fan culture in northern Hesse,” said the arena operators. MT Melsungen has already celebrated its first successes in the arena, including winning two home games last season against Rhein-Neckar Löwen and HSG Wetzlar, which they also played in the new venue. This positive feedback confirms the good atmosphere that the players were able to experience there.
Attractive offers for young fans
The MT Melsungen pays particular attention to the younger audience: cheaper standing room prices in the “Heuboden” are intended to appeal to this target group. This is part of a broader strategy to strengthen ties to the city of Kassel and the region and to acquire new sponsors. The opening of the extensively modernized VIP area in the Nordhessen Arena should also contribute to increasing the quality of the stay. “We have a good knack for how we can bind our fans to us,” emphasizes a club official.
A look at the viewership numbers
The interest in handball seems to be unbroken: In the current 2024/2025 season, the Handball Bundesliga recorded a record number of spectators. A total of 1.69 million people attended the 306 games, almost 100,000 more spectators than the previous season. The average number of spectators per game increased to an impressive 5,525, while the halls achieved an occupancy rate of 86.1 percent. This is a positive sign, especially for MT Melsungen, as the sport and the associated events are experiencing a continuous upswing.
Aside from the sporting successes, the long-term plans for the Nordhessen Arena are also promising. The club faces an exciting future that holds many possibilities with the new home arena. However, the Rothenbach Hall remains the last stop until the move, and the organization around MT Melsungen remains excited about what is to come.
