New trains for Kinzigtalbahn: Where is the schedule, Mr. Klotzsche?

In the Main-Kinzig district the question of new trains on the Kinzigtalbahn is simmering: So far there has been no progress, as Mario Klotzsche from the FDP recently noted. He calls for a clear schedule for the introduction of the new trains, which were already announced by DB Regio and the manufacturer Alstom in 2022. According to previous announcements, a total of 29 new Coradia Stream high-capacity trains are to be procured, which will ensure more comfort and fast travel times between Frankfurt and Fulda. Klotzsche is dissatisfied with the current information situation and criticizes the lack of communication regarding the schedule.

The new trains will not only offer more space and comfort, but will also reduce the travel time between Frankfurt and Fulda by around eight minutes. According to Prof. Knut Ringat, Managing Director of RMV, the new trains between Frankfurt and East Hesse will be in operation from the planned start in December 2025, while the first trains between Frankfurt, Central Hesse and Kassel will be used a year earlier. These trains are designed to provide over 1,080 seats during peak times and 840 seats outside of these times - a significant increase compared to the previous 720 seats.

Technical sophistication and comfort

The new Alstom trains, which are produced in Salzgitter, are equipped with sockets, tables and free WiFi. For travelers, this not only means more space, but also more modern infrastructure. The technology was already booked in the fourth quarter of 2021/22 and is being implemented as part of a comprehensive infrastructure program by the federal government.

These investments, which are expected to rise to a total of 166 billion euros by 2029, are part of an ambitious plan to renovate the dilapidated railway lines and motorway bridges. Rail in particular is to be funded with 107 billion euros, which is 29 billion euros above previous plans, but 18 billion below the actually reported need. Deutsche Bahn is optimistic, but needs stable commitments in order to be able to plan for the long term.

Women and elevators in Schlüchtern

However, there is a positive update from Schlüchtern train station: after a long construction period, the elevators to the tracks were put into operation here. An important measure for accessibility, which now also enables people with limited mobility to travel comfortably.

It remains to be seen how the rail infrastructure in the Kinzigtal will develop and whether Klotzsche's call for more transparency and a binding schedule will be heard. The new trains, hopefully coming soon, could breathe new life into local transport in the region.
